  • Hold The Chocolate Syrup: Healthier Ice Cream Toppings

I'm a sucker for sundae bars.  Once I see the plethora of toppings, it's hard to restrain myself—I go for the hot fudge, whipped cream, sprinkles, everything.

Then the other night, a light bulb went on in my head.  It occurred to me that I could still have a sundae, but make it healthier.  I added a mixture of frozen fruit (raspberries, blackberries and blueberries) on my cookies and cream ice cream, and I discovered that it's delicious!  I thought 'Wow, maybe I should explore some other healthier toppings!'  In my research (and in my head), I've come up with the following options for those seeking a lighter yet satisfying sundae.

Low-fat cocoa powder- For those who love chocolate anything, the cocoa-y goodness will satisfy your craving without the extra calories of chocolate syrup or fudge.

Cinnamon-  Sprinkle a bit on vanilla ice cream and throw in some apple slices.  Add some low fat graham cracker crumbs and you've got a baby apple pie.

Nuts-  High in fat, but good fat!

Fat-free yogurt-  While this might be a lot of dairy, a spoonful of fat-free yogurt is a nice mix-in (try Yoplait Light's fun flavors, like Red Velvet Cake and White Chocolate Strawberry).

Granola- Try a low-fat brand, like Special K or Kashi, to add some whole grain and high fiber crunch to your sundae.

What are your favorite (healthy) ice cream toppings?
