  • Trending: Lasagna Cupcakes

It seems as though the cupcake craze has NOT died down, it's just taken a new form! Instead of being loaded with sweetness and topped with cream, it's loaded with sauce and topped with cheese!

These savory cupcakes are the brainchild of Heirloom-LA (a catering company) after they made mini dishes of macaroni and cheese for a kids birthday party and realized they can make these petit portion sizes with every time of lasagna!

These cupcakes are ideal for those who love the side pieces of lasagna since they cupcake tin make it crusty from all around it!

The cupcakes are offered in a wide variety of flavors (mostly dependent on season) including:mac and cheese, Bolognese, short ribs, beet, corn, and peas.

But making these tiny serving portions of pasta involves plenty of work, as demonstrated by the making of an artichoke lasagna cupcake:

"The pasta is cooked from scratch with eggs and flour; then it goes into a pan, and is cut into sheets. Three sheets, about half the size of a ruler, are placed in a cupcake dish, crossed inside the pan. Three layers of mozzarella cheese, béchamel cream sauce, artichoke, some wild arugula and a little parmesan cheese are added. Then the pasta is folded over." --Wall Street Journal

Heirloom has sold 10,000 lasagna cupcakes alone in the month of December and has 15 employees dedicated to preparing anywhere from 200 to 300 lasagna cupcakes a day. They're available all over Los Angeles and by mail order to New York City in frozen packs on their website.

Would you try these? More importantly, would you ever try making these at home? Is it too cute to pass by or too much effort to bother?
