PIE: The New Cupcake?
Cupcakes have had a long reign in the world of food trends. These miniature cakes were first mentioned in E. Leslie's "Receipts" of 1828 in a revolutionary move that saved time in baking in comparison to baking cakes. "The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America" explains that the cup name had a double meaning because of the practice of baking in small containers such as tea cups. Over the past few years cupcake bakeries have opened around the country and cupcake trucks have popped up in metropolitan cities becoming one of the fiercest food trends.Recent rumblings on the internet are suggesting that cupcakes are on their way out and pie's are on their way IN! All Recipe's 2011 Food Trend Survey stated, "Pies of all types - hot and cold, sweet and savory - are increasingly popular. ... Page views for AllRecipe's pie recipes were up more than 20 percent from 2009. Ice cream pie was 2010's fastest growing pie type."
What's more, NPR stated:
"Cupcakes Are Dead. Long Live The Pie! .. Trend-spotters are calling pie the food of the year. Texas and New York restaurants offer pie happy hours. Pies are showing up at weddings, and pie shops are opening in a neighborhood near you. Pies come in sweet and savory, maxi and mini, deep dish and deep-fried."
What are your thoughts? Are you losing interest in cupcakes? Do you like pie?

My love for cupcakes will never die. But I might have an affair with pie.
No, I don't much care for pie. It could never replace cupcakes in my heart
whaaa icecream pie?! I <3 cupcakes A LOT.
I LOVE pie and would pick it over cake almost any day. i actually used to have a friend who would jokingly mock me whenever she saw me and say, "I like pie! I like pie!" because she thought it was funny how much i loved eating it. If there was a shop that sold bite sized little pies instead of cupcakes i would be a happy woman! :)
they sad tat one foodnetwork too. i dont believe it, its a conspiracy.
@AmyC0987@xanga - Walmart sells petit pecan pies! I <3 them! They're surprisingly delicious and in my opinion, JUST the right size! They sell apple and cherry too :o)
banoffee pie > everything else in the world
i was going to say ew to pie b/c they're not as cute as cupcakes but the picture you put up is adorable! i like some pie but not all
i only like pie on thanksgiving.. when i think of weddings, i think of a cake, not a pie! cakes almost represents celebrations! i couldn't replace cake with pie! :)
I lahve pie.
I do not like cupcakes. But I love pies. So if it's a pie version of cupcake, I might give it a try.
Oh how I love pie, but cupcakes are so pretty. I'm on the fence. :/
Tarts > cupcakes.
My grandma makes AMAZING cherry tarts which would knock the socks off of any cupcake ANY DAY!
The cupcake can never die, the pie can only increase for a while!
I prefer not to gauge my like or dislike for food based on its cuteness factor.
i lihke pieh (say it as if you're Forrest)

@haloed@xanga - Homemade always trumps store bought!
@explosive@xanga - I agree. What good is cute when a food tastes awful?
I'll pick cake and cookies over pies and tarts, but there's room on the dessert buffet for all the goodies. But I would say that I wouldn't prefer a tiny pie over a regular pie...I think tiny pies mean more crust. I prefer filling over crust, unless the crust is very well made: flaky, a little crispy and buttery in flavor.
@babybug329@xanga - and anything grandma makes is made with love :3
@sbaral@xanga - ooh good to know! thanks!
Pie is way better than cake. And I hate cupcakes.
I like cupcakes.
I don't eat much pie... Used to hate it, but I can deal with it now.I don't like cupcakes, especially the icing. I choose pie any day over cupcakes. Give me a blueberry pie and i have no self control. give me a cupcake and i will take maybe a bite. sorry to all you cupcake lovers out there!!!!
Who cares! Bake! I can't believe there are baking "trends". If it tastes good, people will eat it. Personally I love cupcakes because they're so much easier to make cute or well decorate than a cake. On the other hand, I love pie because it's so damn easy. And generally better for you.
