  • PIE: The New Cupcake?

Cupcakes have had a long reign in the world of food trends. These miniature cakes were first mentioned in E. Leslie's "Receipts" of 1828 in a revolutionary move that saved time in baking in comparison to baking cakes. "The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America" explains that the cup name had a double meaning because of the practice of baking in small containers such as tea cups. Over the past few years cupcake bakeries have opened around the country and cupcake trucks have popped up in metropolitan cities becoming one of the fiercest food trends.

Recent rumblings on the internet are suggesting that cupcakes are on their way out and pie's are on their way IN! All Recipe's 2011 Food Trend Survey stated, "Pies of all types - hot and cold, sweet and savory - are increasingly popular. ... Page views for AllRecipe's pie recipes were up more than 20 percent from 2009. Ice cream pie was 2010's fastest growing pie type."

    What's more, NPR stated:

"Cupcakes Are Dead. Long Live The Pie! .. Trend-spotters are calling pie the food of the year. Texas and New York restaurants offer pie happy hours. Pies are showing up at weddings, and pie shops are opening in a neighborhood near you. Pies come in sweet and savory, maxi and mini, deep dish and deep-fried."

What are your thoughts? Are you losing interest in cupcakes? Do you like pie?
