Bartending: An Olympic Sport?
T.G.I. Friday’s and the 2009 bartending champion Brian Zachau have petitioned the International Olympic Committee requesting official recognition of bartending as the next Olympic sport. The franchise restaurant chain has hosted the annual World Bartender Championship, which features 8,000 competitors from around the globe, for the past twenty years.
Whether the restaurant is looking for free publicity or is genuinely advocating bartending, specifically "flairtending" is beyond me.
"What other sport requires ten-hour routines, absolute precision and a fully-memorized playbook? Bartending can be a whole new playing field for Olympic sport," said Trey Hall, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of T.G.I. Friday's. "Twenty years of World Bartender Championships have shown that bartenders at Friday's are no stranger to athletic competition, and our newly awarded 2010 finalists are no different. As a federation of thousands, the sport is ready to go for the gold."
What is "FLAIRTENDING"?
Flairtending is the art of mixing drinks while entertaining guests--think of it as a magic act that ends with serving you your favorite cocktail!
Take a look:
Fans can show their support by signing an online petition on the T.G.I. Friday's Facebook fan page as well as the World Bartender Championship web site.
Personally, there's no denying this takes serious skills, but I think the pole dancers have a better case. What do you think?

I would rather watch this than most of the stuff they show on the Olympics.
hahaha! so in getting totally wasted, i could call it supporting the guys for the games! that sounds so much prettier than lush, dont ya think?
and its on t.g.i.f's website? legit.
The Olympics are too family-friendly to actually allow bartending. (Or pole dancing)
But even though I don't drink I think the flairtending stuff is pretty cool.
Although I prefer coffee baristas and latte art. ^.^
hehehe so silly! they are obv talented, but olympics is stretching it
First pole dancing, now bartending. Where's drum corps in all this?
isnt this just juggling and then pouring a cocktail? thje actual bartending doesnt seem to be involved in the tricks.
if they have an olympic event for fast walking, they should have one for bartending. haha
