  • Burger King Veggie Burgers: Hmmm to Mmmm

As the first major snow of the year began in New York City yesterday, my oldest daughter and I were on a quest for snow boots on 125th Street - a major shopping avenue - in Harlem.  It's been over five years since we've seen snow and children's feet have lengthened immensely in that period of time.

Suddenly, my stomach cried out, "feed me"!  It was then that I stopped and recognized the clues that had preceded this outburst...irritability, drop in energy...Though you can see I'm not the brightest cookie in the jar as far as interpreting my body's signals, I realized it was necessary to satiate this need.

Perusing my immediate surroundings, I realize my options are pretty much fast food burgers and fried chicken, unless I wanted a good sit down.  No time.  Must eat now.  And then, the sudden urge for a Whopper struck me.  Been a long time, but Burger King it is.

My daughter, recently gone vegetarian, had settled on the fact that she would have some french fries to tide her over.  Mind you, none of the members of my immediate family have voted Burger King fries as their favorite.  Since changing to those coated fries years ago, it has not been at the top of our list for french fry runs.  Only when there are no other options.  But the Whopper craving won out.

Passing the man eating his BK meal in the middle of the store and randomly announcing DVDs for sale, we reach the menu counter and checked out our options.  And what, to our wondering eyes should appear, but a full on menu of meals under 550 calories! Top it off with a BK Veggie Burger as one of the options!

    Nutritional Information:

    • 400 calories (with mayo)
    • 5mg cholesterol
    • 8 grams sugar
    • 43 grams carbs
    • 16 grams fat
    • 0 grams trans fat
    • 2.5 grams saturated fat
    • 22 grams protein
    • 1020 mg sodium
    • Allergens:  Wheat, Soy, Egg, Milk

Not horrible considering the nutrition content of some of the other regular menu items.  Add to that, my daughter gave it a thumbs up in the taste category!

Because of our french fry craving, we didn't get the 550 calorie meals, but out of curiosity, I checked out the menu to figure out how they managed to keep the meals under 550 calories.  The trick, it seems, is to substitute their fresh apple fries and low-fat caramel dipping sauce, drop the mayo, add a diet coke!  Clever!  I'm completely impressed with this relatively healthy initiative coming from the king of Whoppers himself!

Apparently, this is only new to me though.  In doing a little digging, I am finding that this has been happening since 2007!  Where have I been?  The Philippines?  Actually, yes, but I would say that my general lack of patronizing fast food joints and my daughter's very recent choice of vegetarianism may have contributed to my ignorance of this realm of food-ness.

In any case, its a good reminder that there are semi-healthy fast food options out there these days with semi-decent flavor.  And, you'll be happy to know my Whopper craving was satisfied.

Any other healthy fast food trends that I should know about?

    • About Me: I'm an almost 40 mother of three teenagers, two crazy fat dogs and one husband. I live in and love New York City. In the last five years or so I've taken up French, shooting for eventual fluency and possibly picking up one day with the man after the kids are gone and moving it all to France. I also learned how to play tennis in the last few years and have, consequently become obsessed with the sport and acquired the delusion of playing on the WTA seniors tour or in a grand slam (Watch out Serena!) Living passionately, I want to see, smell, taste and feel the world through relationships, travel, food and whatever else life throws at me. Still waiting to discover what I want to be when I grow up!
