Burger King Veggie Burgers: Hmmm to Mmmm
As the first major snow of the year began in New York City yesterday, my oldest daughter and I were on a quest for snow boots on 125th Street - a major shopping avenue - in Harlem. It's been over five years since we've seen snow and children's feet have lengthened immensely in that period of time.Suddenly, my stomach cried out, "feed me"! It was then that I stopped and recognized the clues that had preceded this outburst...irritability, drop in energy...Though you can see I'm not the brightest cookie in the jar as far as interpreting my body's signals, I realized it was necessary to satiate this need.
Perusing my immediate surroundings, I realize my options are pretty much fast food burgers and fried chicken, unless I wanted a good sit down. No time. Must eat now. And then, the sudden urge for a Whopper struck me. Been a long time, but Burger King it is.
My daughter, recently gone vegetarian, had settled on the fact that she would have some french fries to tide her over. Mind you, none of the members of my immediate family have voted Burger King fries as their favorite. Since changing to those coated fries years ago, it has not been at the top of our list for french fry runs. Only when there are no other options. But the Whopper craving won out.
Passing the man eating his BK meal in the middle of the store and randomly announcing DVDs for sale, we reach the menu counter and checked out our options. And what, to our wondering eyes should appear, but a full on menu of meals under 550 calories! Top it off with a BK Veggie Burger as one of the options!
Nutritional Information:
- 400 calories (with mayo)
- 5mg cholesterol
- 8 grams sugar
- 43 grams carbs
- 16 grams fat
- 0 grams trans fat
- 2.5 grams saturated fat
- 22 grams protein
- 1020 mg sodium
- Allergens: Wheat, Soy, Egg, Milk
Not horrible considering the nutrition content of some of the other regular menu items. Add to that, my daughter gave it a thumbs up in the taste category!
Because of our french fry craving, we didn't get the 550 calorie meals, but out of curiosity, I checked out the menu to figure out how they managed to keep the meals under 550 calories. The trick, it seems, is to substitute their fresh apple fries and low-fat caramel dipping sauce, drop the mayo, add a diet coke! Clever! I'm completely impressed with this relatively healthy initiative coming from the king of Whoppers himself!
Apparently, this is only new to me though. In doing a little digging, I am finding that this has been happening since 2007! Where have I been? The Philippines? Actually, yes, but I would say that my general lack of patronizing fast food joints and my daughter's very recent choice of vegetarianism may have contributed to my ignorance of this realm of food-ness.
In any case, its a good reminder that there are semi-healthy fast food options out there these days with semi-decent flavor. And, you'll be happy to know my Whopper craving was satisfied.
Any other healthy fast food trends that I should know about?

Not that I know of, but I would like to let you and everyone else know that I am a vegetarian who loves BK Veggie Burgers!

Burger King Veggie burgers are the best. I need one now! and I'm not even a vegan and thats what I always order. They are better than sex!
@Sunrise_Hope_Joy@xanga - Oh you have to try one. I wanna roll around naked in a pool of them....
Can you get 'em with bacon?
Tehehehehe
I would try one for the helluvit though, seriously, I've tried those boca burgers, and they aren't half-bad.
I like BK veggie burgers too! but I don't really go there anymore haha (:
@elizabethtravis@xanga - LOL now THAT is an endorsement! :) :) Thanks, I'm totally going to try one.
It's a morning star farms product. All of their stuff is pretty tasty, including their buffalo "wings."
That's all I eat when I go to BK. I think they're phenomenal.
om nom, soooo good!!!!!
It appears to me that this post is not about veggie burgers...clearly not the point. Ireallylikefood, this was quite misleading.

I totally love Burger King more than all other fast food joints for this particular reason.

Just so your daughter knows, a veggie burger cooked where a regular burger was cooked, is no longer a veggie burger.. Same way with the ever so annoying "You can pick the pepperoni off" No, you can't. I knew about them ages ago, but they do me little good.
@CoverLies@xanga - The veggie burgers don't ever come in contact with meat. They're kept on a separate shelf in the cooler, they have their own color of tongs (green), and their own container that they're cooked in. They don't touch the broiler. Totally vegetarian =]
they taste like tacos :)
I don't know about anyone else, but I loove Burger King fries. :)
This is like good vegetarian junk food mmmmm :) Under 550 meals ftw. Burger King is in my good side now.
this website is very good, you can go and see it

I always loved burger king's fries before they made them healthy (er). hahah... I used to love the BK Broiler (minus the honey mustard.). I'd love to give the veggie burger a shot! =D
They've had a BK veggie burger for years (at least by me). It's Morningstar Farms brand, so it's pretty good, especially now that they've learned how to cook it! The first few times I had it at BK years ago, they kept burning it; non-veggies find it hard to know when fake meat is done cooking since they're used to needing the real meat to be cooked through all the way.
I rarely eat fast food, but when I do, it tends to be BK.
