Ridiculously Thick Yogurt
I've been checking out the yogurt world for one reason: Protein. Why, you may ask, am I so concerned with protein. This, for two reasons. One, my daughter is trying on vegetarianism and, two, I was on The Zone Diet for weight loss, which advocates protein in every meal and every snack.In addition to this, my mother discovered she had type 2 diabetes a few years back, and has adopted the habit of a yogurt, granola and fruit breakfast. Having stayed at her house several times and being a breakfast person, I thought I'd give it a go. Much to my surprise, I really liked it!
Since then, I've kept my refrigerator stocked with plain yogurt. Until now, I wasn't very picky about the brand. That is, until a friend introduced me to Fage Yogurt.
They're pretty clear that the pronunciation is "fa-yeh". It's all over their product and on their website. Apparently they don't want a repeat of Gyro, which I've pronounced, "jy-ro", "guy-ro", "jee-ro" and, what I believe to be correct, "Yee-ro", which would be consistent with the "G" sounding like "Y" in the yogurt about which I'm writing.
No, these are the smart Greeks. They explain pronunciation, they make their yogurt thick (ridiculously thick, as their tag-line so aptly puts it) and they take out the sour bite that characterizes other plain yogurts I've tasted. To put it plainly (no pun intended), it's like eating a bowl of ever so slightly sweetened heavy cream. Absolutely divine!
Other Greek yogurts pale in comparison.
Add to that the astounding nutritional factors. There are 17grams of protein in a 7 oz. serving of this stuff! Incredible! Hold those eggs please, I have a viable alternative here! Then, you have your choice of regular, 2% or 0%. I've tried regular and 0% and the taste is still wonderful.

looks good
I like Astro Balkin full fat style yogurt. It's also super thick with no sugar added and I can add a bit if sweetness to it by fruit/or jam for breakfast. OR...I can use it as a thick sour cream for nachos and such as well. I can never eat normal yogurt again, it almost feels slimy and sickly sweet, espeically the fake sugar zero fat ones.
You can make really thick yogurt by draining any plain one through a sieve. You can also make it better than any you can buy by adding milk powder to the milk, making the yoghurt and then draining it.
@FlowersKill@xanga - And it IS....mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I really like yogurt toooo :D
I LOOOOVE fage!
i love frozen yogurt
I love Greek yogurt. I prefer making yogurt myself, but found that it isn't cost-effective, since my husband doesn't like it... I will probably give this a try.
I love Fage!
that's a lot of protein, must be healthy
i love it!!!
Wow! I am so going to look for this now it looks and sounds great! :)
I love Fage - the regular cherry is my favorite... so delicious :)
I don't like foods with soggy pudding textures, so when I get the normal yoplait yogurt, I put it in the freezer for a couple hours, then eat it like ice cream.
My mom has a shit fit when I said I probably wouldn't bother making myself meat, and only eat it out. "OMG but your PROTEIN?!" She forgets I'm a nut for diary. Cheese, milk, and yep, yogurt. I will see if I can find this brand since I've heard plain yogurt, particularly greek yogurt, is really good for you. Probably better than those yoplaits I get all the time.
AHHH its so good, i put honey on it. mmm
FYI, you'd have to be starving to death in a third-world country or something to actually have a protein deficiency. They're very uncommon, even in vegans, let alone vegetarians.
I lurrrve Greek yogurt! Especially the thickness. I'm more of a Chobani fan myself.
@mademoiselle_rachelxx@xanga - A childhood vegan or vegetarian is extremely prone to protein deficiency because of increased need for high quality protein if he or she does not compliment protein sources correctly. This is a lot more relevant to vegans but obviously can be applicable to both. Also, half the elderly population in the US is estimated to have protein deficiency, although I don't think an actual study's been done (but this statistic is everywhere). My RD prof told me she's seen protein deficiencies in a lot of clients. I'd give you sources where I found these, but hey! It's xanga and I really don't care that much. But I totally know where you're coming from--Americans get way way more protein than they need and this is rarely an issue.
@delication@xanga - I tried Chobani, but it's sour at the end like all the rest. Fage is different like that. I was really surprised!
@Ktothetin@xanga - I haven't tried any of their flavored yogurts, but I might just do that now!
@infinitelyalex@xanga - Very!
@MrsJenBean@xanga - You WON'T be sorry. Someone told me about this and I was skeptical until I tried it. Now I'm a believa! (breaks into Beatles song)
@ThingsYouDontKnowAboutMe@xanga - Hm, I was not aware of all of that! I guess I mostly think of your average, healthy, young adult Americans.
If only it didn't have so many calories.
I'm kind of excited to try this now... Your description of it made it sound delicious. I absolutely love heavy cream so if it tastes anything like that, I'm definitely gonna try it!
greek yogurt makes my soul sing with joy. fage and chobani are the best.
