Food Artist of the Week: Maurice Bennett
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Food is an art.
I'm not talking about cooking, or eating, or even the food itself. (All of which are masterpieces in themselves.)
I'm talking about food-related art brought to you by unique people who see something more in your average fruit or cupcake.
This week's food artist?
MAURICE BENNETT.
You may have heard of him before...or at least his work. Bennett takes burnt toast and turns into art.
That's right! While you and I might just throw away our burnt toast, our artist here makes portraits and abstract art out of them!
This New Zealand native originally owned a grocery store, but couldn't deny his burning passion for art. (Tee hee. BURNING passion. Toast humor.)
He started off in the 1980s by making art out of burnt objects, and then finally settled on using toast as his medium.
Bennett has done portraits of famous people and icons like Elvis Presley, Mona Lisa, and even our President Obama! He's also done some more abstract work like the one featured below:
His work isn't as simple as it sounds. Bennett takes slices of white bread and takes a blow torch and burns it with a cast iron stencil. His largest toast mosaic so far?
6,000 slices.
Now, THAT's a lot of bread!

What do you guys think of his burnt art?

I prefer the abstract. Neat stuff!

fod art is great but whats the point of making it if its only there to be pretty. why can't it be eaten too?!? I hate to see food wasted.
