  • Interesting News Feed: Willy Wonka's Three-Course Meal Chewing Gum To Become a Reality

    News from UK's Telegraph.

Ever wondered what it would be like to taste one of Willy Wonka's fantastical creations? (Not the actual candy company owned by Nestle, mind you.)

According to the Telegraph, scientists at the Institute of Food Research in Norwich are working frantically to realize Willy Wonka's (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl) fantastical three-course-meal gum.

In the book, the infamous candy maker Willy Wonka concocts an unusual chewing gum, which delights the gum chewer with the extraordinary flavors of a huge meal (appetizer, main dish, and then dessert).

Using microscopic capsule technology, researchers at Norwich can successfully manipulate the timing of different flavors within a single piece of chewing gum.

Microscopic capsules are tiny capsules embedded within the gum that release flavors when broken. Depending on the strength and type of the mini-capsules, different flavors can be released at different times.

For example, some capsules in the gum will easily break on contact with saliva. These easily broken capsules may contain the first course of the meal: tomato soup.

Then after some chewing, the other set of capsules in the same gum will break, releasing roast beef flavors for the second course.

Then finally, there will be the last set of capsules that are harder to break and require vigorous chewing. These harder-to-break capsules will contain the final course of the meal: the infamous blueberry pie.

Different capsules are protected by an oily shell so that flavors will not mix during the chewing process.

    Questions for gum chewers:

How cool does all this microscopic-nano-technology sound? What do you think about the three-coursed meal chewing gum? What other Charlie and the Chocolate Factory candy would you like to see come true?
