Are My Eggs Poisoned?
With recent outbreaks of salmonella from tainted eggs there is a decline in egg consumption across America. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning last around a week and they include debilitating stomach cramps and severe dehydration. When I was at the grocery store last week I noticed flyers on the egg’s refrigerator door stating that their eggs were safe and not a part of the recall. It’s been expressed that the salmonella outbreak has affected around 550 million eggs. It’s amazing to me how that many eggs can get out without detection by food inspectors.
Have you ever had salmonella poisoning? Are you avoiding eating eggs right now?

I don't eat eggs, so I'll laugh at you dying people.
NY is safe right :D
I'm not eating eggs because I ate like a million eggs when I lived in Kansas and that's all we could afford back then..I'm sick of eggs.
I thought cooking the eggs killed all of the bacteria? So I don't get this very much..
@Hinase@xanga - cooking eggs until the yolk and white are firm, or till it reaches a temp of 160* kills the bacteria, but there are tons of people who eat their eggs undercooked... soft boiled, sunny side up, poached.... and all the people who lick the spoon when making brownies and shit...
I'm vegan so I don't eat eggs. Not by choice though, I'm just intolerant to them. It's really interesting cutting eggs out of ones diet. There's tons of alternatives for baking... hopefully people can realize this and not get too down about it!
@Hinase@xanga - A lot of people don't cook their eggs all the way, or don't have safe food handling practices. For instance, if you hold an egg that is infected with salmonella (the bacteria is only on the shell at this point usually) the bacteria transfer to your hands. If you don't then wash your hands you can transfer that bacteria to any other surface you touch. If you start processing another part of your meal that will not be cooked to a bacteria killing temperature or for long enough to kill bacteria then you run the risk of infection. This kind of risk is easily avoided by proper kitchen practices.
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/Basics_for_Handling_Food_Safely/index.asp Check that out if you aren't sure how to safely handle and prepare food.
If you like your eggs runny yolked then you run the risk of infection through undercooked egg. This usually doesn't pose much of a risk as our modern practices are generally safe. It is only when something like this happens and a whole batch of eggs come through the system. Of course, until a problem is spotted we often don't know about the problem. So there is always the possibility that undercooking an egg can get you in trouble. The problem is usually related to a facility that isn't following the rules as they should.
Again, you shouldn't have a problem if you are safely handling and preparing and properly cooking your eggs, even if you get some from the bad batch.
I have never had food poisoning that I am aware of. I'm not avoiding eggs, my grocery store (Publix) has said they are not effected by this recall. If you are worried that your eggs might be in the recall check here: http://www.eggsafety.org/mediacenter/alerts/73-recall-affected-brands-and-descriptions
@Platypi007@xanga - Thank you =) I always wash my hands with soap after handling an egg or eggs. I know about that crazy bacteria. I appreciate your long response to my comment lol : I cook my eggs until they are all the way brown, just to be on the safe side and I love crispy eggs lol
@zombiequeen26@xanga - I lick the spoon when I make brownies and never got sick from it...I must be lucky then lol ; But thank you also =)
@Hinase@xanga - i lick the spoon, bowl and anything else i can... brownie batter is freaking awesome. lol. im also one of the folks that eat my eggs runny. {mmmmm runny eggs and toast} and have never gotten sick from either one.. as @Platypi007@xanga - said safe food handling practices are the best ways to keep healthy.
@zombiequeen26@xanga - Yeah it is..I love brownies mix..that's probably why I make brownies in the first place..to eat the batter lol You can get away from it(eating eggs runny) if you cook it a bit..cook it good enough lol
Just hard-boil the egg to cook it all the way and we won't have that problem... and if it's really a bother to eat them that way, just crack one into some ramen soup (the way Asians do it)!
@LitlKittyKat@xanga - Ahh! Eggs in Ramen are SUPER tasty <33
You know you can avoid that by shopping local and supporting your local egg farmers.
I get local farm-fresh, truly organic eggs. They taste better and are a hell of a lot better for you.
@secretbeerreporter@xanga - YES! love this suggestion!
@CelestDiggory@xanga - LOL yeah, they are!!! I love cooking them in shabu. ^_^
@gniknus@xanga - Don't let anyone give you cups of coffee that have half and half in them while they were thinking really really hard about putting soy in there instead!
I love eggs D: but I dont live in America.. so I guess I can still eat it?
since the recall, ive had a craving for boiled eggs everyday. i want what i cant have. =(
I don't usually like eating eggs, unless they're deviled eggs. I hate that white slimy part on a fried egg....I think it's the placenta.
I haven't had salmonella but I have had food poisoning from eggs. I went to a restaurant and ordered a caesar salad and I started feeling sick that night. I thought it was alright at first because sometimes I get an upset stomach from eating meals but I knew there was something different when I started throwing up. The whole two days I was sick I threw up everything I ate. I literally lost 5 pounds in two days;/ I felt so tired and so sick.
So just be careful when it comes to caesar salad, I believe they make it with raw eggs so anything can happen really.
@explosive@xanga - lmao I think it is too.. it creeps me out :|
Nope, I just make sure to cook my eggs all the way through. I love my eggs over easy but I've been avoiding them at the moment =/.
I did for about two weeks but then I had a craving.
No, I love eggs. I don't really care about those media outbreaks anyway. I have a turtle, turtles can give you salmonella, am I gonna give up my turtle? No. Just take better precautions, like washing your hands before and after you touch a turtle, or cook your eggs all the way. There is a certain temperature in which bacteria cannot survive, so cook your eggs well and kill the bacteria with a fiery death.
Gah.. it's ridiculous how we can't even trust food these days. I can't wait to have my own farm & produce my own foods. O.o
omg i just made my boyfriend like 4 eggs this morning
