  • The Art of Japanese Cuisine

Unfortunately, sushi is one of those things that one either loves or hate. I'm one of those people who love it. I love everything about it- the way it's prepared, the ingredients, the way it's presented and how it tastes. I love the variation of textures. I like how the plate reminds me of a blank canvas and each sushi piece is like a stroke of paint- each representing a different aspect of the whole picture. I love how the portion of a piece is just right- you can get one of each without getting stuffed. Also, I always admired the way it's consumed. I was always fascinated by the idea of chopsticks as utensils. I'm hoping to open people's minds about sushi with this blog entry.

I can't see how sushi would seem 'gross' to anyone. Perhaps, I was always attracted to the aesthetic of it. I guess the fact that it's raw keeps some people away. Humans nowadays don't typically go by the river with a spear and hunt for fish for eating so how could someone assume how raw fish would taste like? It does not taste raw. This is how it really tastes like- think of a cooked fish, let's say it’s salmon. So, think of a cooked salmon.. when it enters your mouth, it's soft, tender and salty. Now, a raw salmon would be soft, tender and not salty (unless you dip it in soy sauce). The only difference is a cooked salmon is hot and raw salmon is served cold. Also, raw salmon is super moist and chewy.

Now, if one really can't gather enough courage to try sushi that involves raw fish. There's an alternative: veggie based sushi. Usually, the vegetables involved are cucumbers, carrots and avocados. Also, there's always the seaweed sushi (seaweed is loaded with antioxidants). There's even fruit based sushi, which is a growing trend is urban restaurants. The fruit and veggie based sushi is such a great way to keep tab on eating healthy and it tastes amazing when it's fresh.

For those of us who loves sushi- I want to share my sushi eating experience with you.

There's a restaurant not too far from me that serves all-you-can-eat-sushi. The idea is brilliant. My friends and I have been going here for about a year now. This is where we celebrate life- birthdays, promotions, employments and anniversaries. What is amazing about it is that they allow you to take full control- they hand you a pen and the order sheet where you can check off items that you'd like to order. It's a 4 course meal: starters, soup/salad, main entree and dessert. The best thing is that you can order a la carte (which means just one piece). That's when the fun begins because you can fill your plate with every sushi they have available.

The pictures alone have to make you interested.

Do you like sushi? Are you scared to try it?
