  • Would You Eat This?

The fish pictured above is called a lionfish. Lionfish are an invasive species that consumes 56 species of fish and some invertebrate species. They have been primarily kept as exotic pets in aquariums, but they are now inhabiting the waters from North Carolina to the Bahamas and they are threatening the recovery of over fished species such as grouper and snapper. They also feed on parrotfish, which control the growth of algae on the reef.

Conservationists and scientists are now suggesting that the solution to the problem is to eat the lionfish. You heard me right. It is supposedly our "civic duty" to eat this fish to help control the population. Promoters of eating lionfish say that it is tasty and has white, flaky meat. Watch the spines, though, because their venomous! But don't worry, the venom is only in the spines, not the rest of the meat.

Have you ever seen one of these fish before? Have you ever eaten one? If not, would you?
