  • 53rd & 6th: All You Need

If you're a meat lover like me and if you're anywhere near NYC, this is the place to go for a mouth watering delight- 53rd &6th. I love it so much that I picked it as my display name. Yes, it's that good. Being a New Yorker, I've heard of this joint from friends. They would tell me about the wonder of the white sauce and the chicken that goes with it but I didn't have my first taste of it until last year. My friends and I just got out of a concert (The Offspring) at Roseland Ballroom and we were starving. One of my friends, Spiro, said "hey, we're not too far from the chicken and rice place so let's go there." Our expedition begins.

After walking for about 7 or 8 minutes, we were there... ahhh, "Oh my, what is that smell!?" It was the delicious smell of meat and sauce merging together creeps up the senses.

The line was long (that's what I thought but would later learn that it actually wasn't that bad) but Spiro says "guys, it's so worth it because it's so freakin' awesome" so we patiently waited. As we got closer, I got this feeling- well, what do you know... I was actually anxious to taste this dish that many of my friends have been telling to eat. My friend ordered for us: lamb and rice for me and chicken and rice for everyone else. Spiro requested the white sauce and the man in the bright yellow shirt generously poured this mysterious creamy white sauce. "Hey, what's this" I asked but no one knew what was in the white sauce. Everyone told me to just eat it.

Oh my! The Halal food stand on 53rd & 6th served the best meal I have ever had under $10 ($6 to be exact).

    Ingredients I noticed:

    • yellow rice
    • lettuce
    • pita bread
    • thinly sliced lamb

It was just so good. I can't find any other words to describe it. It was good. It was yummy. It was delicious. It was tasty.

Spiro watched as my face filled with pure bliss. I realized that moment, that he was one of my very best friends. Since it's just a food stand, there are no tables or chairs but people have no problem sitting on the sidewalk or benches located nearby. As for my friends and I, we ate on the subway on the way home.

Every time I'm around the area, that's where I go to get food now. They give you a large portion for your money's worth. The thing I like about it is that instead of pouring the white sauce and hot sauce themselves, they decided to have a stand filled with the condiments beside the cart so that everyone could pour according to their liking. So, pretty much the choice is either lamb or chicken with rice. They also have gyros.

A beverage vendor is located right next to the Halal food cart and you can get a bottle of water or soda for $2.
I do have a secret place I go to eat- I cross the street toward MoMA and across the street from there, there is this strip of benches and that's where I sit. I sit there, get comfortable and enjoy the heavenly goodness of meat and white sauce. What could be better than meat and white sauce?

I think this is quite a very nice thing I'm doing. I'm telling you about my city's secret so come and visit and have your meat. I promise it's worth the trip.

    What's your favorite street vendor?
