  • Does The Subway Diet Really Work?

We've all seen the commercials for Subway with our lovely friend Jared advocating the premise that Subway helped him lose a ton of weight. In fact, Jared lost nearly 250 lbs in only one year from just eating Subway! That's an amazing feat, folks. But I'm just not sure how that is all possible. For instance

The other day I went to Subway and ordered a sandwich with ham, provolone cheese, tomato, lettuce and mustard. To me that honestly doesn't sound like a low fat sandwich. But I researched what Jared did to see what his modes were.
Here is some background information, Jared used to be quite a large fellow. In fact he was over 400lbs and ate around 10,000 calories a day. Which of course isn't good. So here is what our friend Jared did to lose weight on this Subway diet. He didn't eat breakfast, and ate a small turkey sub and a large veggie sub along with some  potato chips and a diet soda.

And this is what Jared ate for an entire year. Now some people might say, "Hey weight (Ha get it? Weight. Wait. That's a play on words, folks) a second. That sounds like a lot of food, how did he eat that and lose over 200 lbs in a year?" Well, I'll tell you how. He went from eating 10,000 calories to 2,000 calories a day. Which is 5x less than he was normally eating. That's how the deed was done, folks.

    Before and after.

So maybe it wasn't necessarily Subway that helped Jared lose all that weight, it was the extreme change in diet from eating 10,000 calories to the normal amount of calories that a person needs in a day, ie. a snappy 2,000.

So perhaps if you cut down your calories and engage in some light exercise you can go from this:

    To this:

    In 365 short days.

What do you think? Do you think the Subway diet really works?

DAMN. That is one BIG BURGER.

What you say makes sense. It comes down to eating less and exercising more.

  • his1mzperfect@xanga

Yeah, but I figure if you do go on the subway diet, you probably wouldn't be adding cheese nor mayo because those aren't all that healthy. But I would find it difficult to eat a subway sandwich everyday, and not get tired of it.

I heard earlier this year that he has regained some of the weight that he has lost on his Subway Diet.  I never tried this diet but friends who have lost a lot of weight since high school says the same thing: Cut back on your overall calorie intake and burn more calories than you consume.

  • Alatariel40@xanga

Jared also walked a lot. At first, hauling around all that weight is a lot of exercise. Later, he continued to increase his walking. It wasn't all Subway, either. Subway was the daily treat he gave himself. He cut out a lot of stuff while adding more vegetables.

Subway wasn't the key, it was merely one of the means by which he stayed motivated.

    Subway wouldn't work for me.

Oh my god.... people literally take this SERIOUSLY.

I work at Subway, and the same people come in there EVERY. SINGLE. DAY and order the SAME.OLD.SUB. Granted, they're eating ones without cheese and loaded on veggies, so good for them. But I'm like "How do you eat that and not get tired of it?!!??" I mean, I work there so I get a free meal everyday, but it all tastes the same to me. Plus, it is loaded with sodium and other not THAT great for you additives (in the meats and cheeses). I never go out to eat there anymore out of my own free will/time. However, it is a healthy alternative to other fast food restaurants out there. I am happy I work at a restaurant that serves those options to our obese population. But, I do not recommend eating Subway as a diet because a.) there's really not that much of a HEALTHY variety. and b.) you are going to get really burnt-out on the six inch subs.

I think that one could just eat a balanced diet and have a whole heck of a lot more balance if they just ate normal... and exercised.  I think it would be healthier too more than Subway.

  • Erika_Steele@xanga

It would only work if going on the Subway diet resulted in reducing the amount of calories you consume.

  • Silatda@xanga

my boyfriend was a subway monkey for a year and a half and he GAINED weight while working there. (he was usually eating meatball marinaras with cheese, so it's not too hard to figure out the weight gain)

it all depends on how/what you eat and what else you're doing (if anything). I'm sure there's plenty of healthier alternatives to subway.

Just eating right/healthier, cutting down on daily caloric intake, drinking more water, less soda, sugar, etc. and actually exercising a bit can do wonders, I think.

  • TheLuckiestWomanEver@xanga

You're right; his weight loss had nothing to do with the fact that he was eating Subway sandwiches, but that he was eating MUCH less food than he used to, and he was also working out a little, at least by walking to the Subway shop.

  • finalcountd0wn@xanga

Ok. You need so many more nutrients and variation than subway alone can provide you with, as well as exercise etc. and like everyone else said, you would get tired of it etc. etc. How has no one mentioned how EXPENSIVE that would be??????? let's say he spent $10 a day. (with a foot long + chips + drink + small sub it would be a bit more than that). for 365 days. what a waste. ($3,650 if you didn't work it out already)

  • CombinedEffort@xanga

I love Subway!  I eat it at least twice a week. Not because I think it has less calories, I just think it tastes a lot better than other fast food.

  • BebstersBlog2@xanga

Subway is a treat for me.

And no offense to anyone, but if a black guy creepishly stuffing his face decided to cut calories and exercise turned into a white guy with muscles it would be absolutely hilarious.

  • SpiritedConvo

I hate how people think losing weight is as easy as eating less calories than you burn...

  • snarkius@xanga

Save the money from eating out everyday and hire a trainer and nutritionist instead.

  • callanmathis

@SpiritedConvo - I mean to be honest if you do cut your calories and eat healthier and exercise everyday then you will lose weight, it's pretty much that simple but a lot of the time people don't think that doing something that simple will actually work.

  • CelestDiggory@xanga

I read an article that said he only lost the weight because a Subway opened on the campus of the college he attended and he had a crush on one of the woman working there. So cute, and such a great motivator, too!

But I think it works, if you get something with a significantly lower caloric value than what you're eating now. Like. A veggie delight, no mayo, no soda, and baked chips. Bring some bottled water or real fruit juice (not concentrate, people!). Then eat fruit whenever you get a craving. An apple a day, huh?
  • CelestDiggory@xanga

Also, it would be a terrible diet for me. My subway sandwiches are disgustingly artery clogging. You would think, 'how could someone make something so terrible at a subway?' But please. Don't ask.

You'll want to help me o_o I don't need help. I need a good subway sammich every month ^_^ (Maybe less. I'm starting to get fat XD)

  • phuck_diz_shiz@xanga

certain subway subs are fattening while others not so much
Example: meat ball marina bad  / veggy sub good

  • seekingzephyr@xanga

Subway everyday would make me gain weight.

&I don't suffer from an eating disorder or anything; 2000 calories a day is just too much, for my body.

  • seekingzephyr@xanga

@SpiritedConvo - I don't mean to seem ignorant... but isn't that how it works? I've lost 20lbs going by that "theory" and am now at a weight my body is content at. Scientifically it makes sense, doesn't it? Honestly, please, enlighten me if I'm wrong.

  • DietMagic

Not sure if it is effective all the time.  The proper portions of good lean meats and veggies sure does help.  I been using www.DietMagicBuy.com and it is really helping me curb those evil cravings and hunger pains.

  • Art_Is_War423@xanga

kinda want that cheeseburger, i won't lie.

  • Stephanie

@SpiritedConvo - It is as simple as that. It's just harder for some and easier for others. It's really not THAT HARD to lose weight.

  • SpiritedConvo

@seekingzephyr@xanga - @callanmathis - That's because it doesn't work for everyone.  I don't know why but just think about it.  We all lose weight at different speeds.  (1.)Men seem to lose weight faster than women. (2.)I'm sure if you have tried to lose weight at some point you've hit "plateaus" for a few days at a time where you didn't lose anything, despite burning more calories than you consumed.

I've done the whole "diet and exercise" thing and it didn't work and I'm sure I'm not the only one.  I know you may be thinking "sure, she probably didn't do enough exercise" or something like that but that's not true.  I worked out incredibly hard for three months straight almost everyday and made a point to consume 1,200 calories or less.  I'm sure others people are in the same boat.
I know you see people go on these crazy diets and think "why don't they just exercise and eat less?"  Some of them might have already tried that and are getting desperate.  Others have probably not and are looking for that easy way out.  You never know.
  • SpiritedConvo

@Stephanie - It may have not been that hard for you, but don't judge everyone by the same standards.  Our bodies are all different.  It is incredibly difficult for some.
