Catdaddy Carolina Moonshine
I never could get the photo turned around from my last blog. It's facing the right way on my laptop but for some reason xanga turns it around. I must of tried ten times to get it right.
Today's liquor comes to us from Piedmont Distillers from Madison, North Carolina. They are a fairly new company having started in 2001. Even today they have less than ten employees and operate out of the old town train station. Usually when I think of moonshine, I tend to think of ethanol and quite a bit of burn.
Nose: Very pleasant. Right off it reminds me of eggnog. It definitely has the cinnamon and nutmeg qualities upfront. I keep looking down expecting to see a milky substance instead of something clear as water. It also has the sweetness that we generally experience with eggnog. There is very little burn on the nose.
Taste: There's some burn going down. It's just enough to warm the nose but not to the point where it's uncomfortable. It also does not mask the subtle sweetness or the cinnamon flavors that were also present in the smell. This moonshine also has a nice clean finish.
Drinkability: I could sit here and sip this for a bit. It would be great after a nice dinner. There was not near the ethanol taste or the burn that I was expecting. I could also see this being very versatile in making a nice cocktail. It could be paired with just about anything and could bring out the spice in a fruity drink or warm the soul in a creamy drink. I think it would also go nicely with some dark rum or just about any soda. A/$25

- 1 oz. Catdaddy Caroline Moonshine
- 1 oz. Bourbon Whiskey
- 1 oz. White Creme de Cacao
- 1 oz. Lemon Juice
Combine all this in your shaker and pour over ice into a lowball glass. For bourbon, I used Maker's Mark and I used DeKuyper's Creme de Cacao.

As you can see, it's kind of got a cloudy yellowish look to it. I'm a little surprised the color of the bourbon did not overpower more. When I go to taste it, not one flavor sticks out right away. You get the oak..the spice, and the lemon all at the same time and they blend together very nicely. You don't really get any chocolate but I think if it were gone you wouldn't get the complexity. This is a very well done cocktail and makes a very nice sipping drink. It came from the company website.

The Kitty Carlisle is actually served "up," i.e., without ice. Check out its source, Cocktail Buzz, at http://cocktailbuzz.blogspot.com/2010/05/manhattan-cocktail-classic-is-here.html.
