  • The Glenrothes: Select Reserve

I recently picked up this bottle of scotch after reading reviews of the Alba Reserve on one of my favorite sites drinkhacker.com.  I honestly meant to pick up the same bottle but didn't realize I had gotten the wrong one until I got home.  The liquor laws here are terrible and we had to drive 45 minutes to the nearest store that carried this brand so we did not feel like making the trek back.   When I first read about this particular scotch, I had not scene it in any of the liquor stores I had been to so we wrote to the company and asked if they knew where we could get it.  We received a reply fairly quickly which is pretty rare so that's one good mark already for having great customer service.

Nose: Nice and smooth with just a very slight tinge of alcohol burn.  The hints of oak are very nice and not overpowering.  There are also some undertones of carmel, vanilla, and spice.

Taste: Not much immediate burn but a little more in the after taste.  Besides that, you get most of the vanilla and spice upfront with a tiny bit of oak that slowly fills your mouth as the first flavors wear off.

Drinkability: All in all, it went down very smooth.  There was not much of a burn.  It was also one of the more complex scotches that I have tasted and it seems like it tasted different every time I took another sip and tried to pick out more flavors.  B+/$45

What's your favorite scotch or liquor?

Things like this make me wish I were 21 already.
    That sounds delicious.

I love Bowmore's Legend, a single malt Islay scotch that usually runs $25 or so for a bottle.  I'm not sure about Bowmore's other offerings as I've never shelled out the extra $ to get anything else since the Legend is such a nice scotch for cheap (I'm a recently graduated, unemployed Masters student, so cheap is good, but I do have discerning tastes!)

The nose is mildly fruity, somewhat sweet, mildly peaty.  Not much alcohol on the nose, maybe a touch of spice.  Very pleasant.

It has a medium to light body, with a slightly strong alcohol burn.  Taste is mildly sweet and fruity, with a mild peat, slightly more smokey aftertaste.

For those who love Islay scotch but don't have much to spend this is great!  I don't see many other Islay malts on the shelf in the $20-40 range and this is usually right in the middle of that but can be found for $20 on sale.

@Platypi007@xanga - Thanks for the suggestion!  That sounds awesome!  I don't have much money and a discerning taste like you so I'm always open.
