  • 10 Reasons to Eat an Apple a Day!

I was thinking about the phrase: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away", and I decided to google it.  Using a variety of different websites, I have comprised a list of the 10 reasons I thought best to make sure you consume one apple daily.

    1. Apples help you manage your weight.  Dieters who eat 3 apples a day (presumably, before meals) have been found to lose significantly more weight than dieters who do not.  The good amount of fiber they contain is probably the reason that they aid in a feeling of fullness, and also helps with digestion.

    2. Apples help you breathe.  While the exact reasons for this are unknown, people who eat 5 apples a week (or more) have been found to be in much better respiratory shape than people who do not.  Furthermore, children with asthma have been found to wheeze less when they drink apple juice on a regular basis.

    3. Apples help your brain.  Quercetin is a component in apples that has not only been found to reduce the likelihood of the development of Alzheimer's disease by protecting brain cells from the radical damage associated with this disease.  (Additionally, quercetin has been found to reduce the growth rate of prostate cancer cells.)  Apples also contain phytonutrients, which have also been found to prevent the development of Alzheimer's disease (as well as Parkinson's disease).

    4. Apples help your muscles.  Apples help to regulate water balance, which in effect helps the functionality of muscles.

    5. Apples help your bones.  They contain boron, which is known to help bone growth.  They also contain phloridzin, which has been found to help post-menopausal women prevent the development of osteoporosis and may be an aid in strengthening bone density.

    6. Apples help your energy level.  They contain enough glucose to accomplish this, while still being a low GI food (so you won't get the sugar-high followed by a crash), and are composed of about 80% water and close to no fat.

    7. Apples help to manage your cholesterol levels.  They contain phenols, which prevent good cholesterol (LDL) from being transformed into bad cholesterol (oxidized LDL).

    8. Apples help your immune system.  They contain vitamin C - we all know about vitamin C, I assume?

    9. Apples help your teeth.  The juice in an apple contains bacteria-fighting elements, which kill about 80% of the bacteria in the mouth of the person that eats it!

    10. Apples keep you young.  Not only do apples contain a whole host of antioxidants that help to detoxify the human body, but the effects of this detoxification process have included increased hair growth, decreased wrinkle development, and the inhibition of other age-related problems.

    So get crunchin' y'all.

What are some other specific benefits of eating apples?  What about other fruits?

I love traveling to new places and trying new things - which can either be wonderful or disastrous in the food arena. I am a New Yorker situated in Virginia for school, although I try hard not to stay in one place for too long!
