  • Greek Yogurtolics Anonymous

I have a confession to make- I am a Greek Yogurt "addict."  My addiction actually started by accident, when I placed what I thought was regular yogurt in my cart at Walmart. I didn't realize that I bought a Yoplait Greek-X2-the-Protein yogurt until I got home.

I thought it was going to taste nasty, and too tangy (like traditional Greek yogurt does). I know from experience because I buy Labneh, a strained yogurt, at the Lebanese store for my husband. I have tried Labneh before and didn't like the tang, and that you have to add EVOO to make it taste better.

To my surprise, the Yoplait Greek isn't at all the same as Labneh! The constancy is similar to Labneh, but the taste is out of this world. Thick, creamy, and with 12g of protein with no fat- I was hooked!

I have tried two brands of Greek Yogurt since, and these are my brief reviews-

*Chobani- (purchase a case at Costco). I bought a case which contained Strawberry, Blueberry and Peach. OH my. Yogurt on the top, fruit on the bottom.  It reminded me most of eating the delicious old-fashioned yogurt of my childhood years.

*Okinos- (purchase at Whole Foods).  I bought several flavors when they were on sale, and my favorite is definitely the caramel! You have to try this stuff, because it is dessert without the fat and the calories. I thought I was eating ice cream! So good.

Other brands that I plan to sample:

    *FAGE- (purchase at Whole Foods).

    *Brown Cow(purchase at Whole Foods).

We all know that with any addiction there is always a catch, right? Well, the one problem with buying Greek Yogurt is the price, which can be almost double that of regular non-fat Yoplait costs at Walmart (and almost 4x the cost if you buy Greek Yogurt at Whole Foods (or "Whole Paycheck," as I like to call it). This is because it takes more milk to produce Greek yogurt than it does to produce traditional yogurt.

I don't think I am ever going back to traditional yogurt and will continue to pay the high cost for Greek yogurt at the store. For once, I have an addiction that is actually good for me!

What is your current 'addiction'?  Have you ever thought about trying out mine?
