  • Under $7: Steak Dinner for Two (with leftovers)!

In today's economy, we realize the importance of making every penny count.  At the same time, sometimes we have to relax, escape a little bit, and treat ourselves.  These needs don't have to conflict!

Recently, we enjoyed a delicious steak dinner paired with a premium micro-brewed beer for under $7 total, and had leftovers!

    The Steak:

Last time we were at the store we found some Sirloin strips on thrift sale for $2.29, marked down from about $4.00.  It was a little less than a pound, cut into three strips.  It was just about at the edge of acceptable selling date, but we froze it immediately after we got home and thawed it for this meal, and it was just fine!  We seasoned it with black pepper, garlic salt, crushed red pepper, fennel, and a little olive oil, and broiled it for 15 minutes.  If you freeze meat and then thaw it, make sure you pat it dry so that it sears better.

    The Sides:

We oven roasted about a pound of russet potatoes ($1.00), 1/3 cup chopped onion, a couple of pinches bacon fat bits, and a tablespoon butter.  We seasoned with about a 1/2 tsp each garlic salt, white pepper, and paprika.  They can roast or broil for about a 1/2 hour, and don't forget to turn them frequently so that they cook evenly and get a nice color.

We also microwaved some frozen chopped spinach ($0.30) and added a bit of garlic powder, salt, and fresh ground black pepper.

    The Beer:

We paired this with a delicious, rich micro-brewed IPA ($2.50, Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA).  As you beer connoisseurs know, the most delicious beer you will ever have is the first half of the first beer that you taste on any given evening.  We split one Dogfish Head, since it's a very rich, very strong beer, and it was just enough to complement our meal.

We enjoyed all this, and (in case you haven't been counting) it only came out to $6.09 plus tax, and we had some leftovers as well!

What do you think of this dinner?  What's the best thing you've ever cooked for under $7.00?
