Sugar's Out... Agave Is In!

There is always a new wave of artificial chemicals to sweeten our meals and drinks without the calories, sugars or fat. But have you heard about the new trend of Agave Nectar? It's an all natural sweetener that has a low glycemic index (which is absorbed into the body slowly, preventing a spike in blood sugar) and is 25% sweeter than sugar so less is needed when adding to your food or drink.Apparently it has been consumed by ancient civilizations for over 5,000 years! I'm sure you've heard about Goji Berries, and Acai which ancient people used to stave off hunger on long treks, and to provide energy. Basically Oprah found out about it and now I'm pretty sure there is even an Acai flavored Absolute Vodka. But back to Agave Nectar. It's all natural, and one of those fads that people will swear by...even Oprah I'm sure! It's relatively low in calories, fat, and sugar. It looks and has the consistency of honey, but not quite the taste. It blends in with almost everything, so you can use it as a substitute for sugar when baking, or put it in your coffee or tea. They are even making different flavors of Agave like Maple, which is excellent in oatmeal and on waffles.
Who knows there may even be an Absolute Agave vodka soon.
Has anyone tried Agave Nectar yet?

My friend and I were just talking about this!
bought some in mexico! :)
I prefer my agave intake to come from Tequila, but this sounds interesting.
i love agave!! it's so sweet and not bad for you. greek yogurt, chopped walnuts, and agave over the top. yummmyum!
Haven't tried it yet. But agave is higher in fructose than high fructose corn syrup, so it's definitely not as healthy as it seems.
It's good used as syrup for waffles and pancakes too!
They have agave syrup in Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at my school~ It's good in teas and stuff (: but it tastes kind of like leaves/flowers... =/
I have tried both this brand and another called "Madhava" (which is lighter in color and I prefer it over the other). It's thin like a simple syrup so it's much easier to add to recipes or dishes than, say, honey, which can be super thick and a mess to measure out... or just time consuming (wait for it......). The flavor is much more concentrated and not as musky as honey (unless you're eating truly raw honey, 1up), so don't worry too much when people say that Agave is higher in sugar/calories than other sweeteners- that just means you don't have to use as much to achieve the same flavor! Efficient. :) Es Delicioso, tambien. But everything in moderation... "including moderation," as Oscar Wilde so cleverly added.
Have you tried jacon syrup? I myself haven't gotten around to it yet, but I believe it's another cactus derived sugar that's low glycemic.
I use it. Very good on oatmeal and pancakes.
I've been using agave for a couple of years now - I'm hooked!
I love it mixed with a bit of cinnamon on a wholegrain bun - yummy dessert
