  • Sugar's Out... Agave Is In!

There is always a new wave of artificial chemicals to sweeten our meals and drinks without the calories, sugars or fat. But have you heard about the new trend of Agave Nectar? It's an all natural sweetener that has a low glycemic index (which is absorbed into the body slowly, preventing a spike in blood sugar) and is 25% sweeter than sugar so less is needed when adding to your food or drink.

Apparently it has been consumed by ancient civilizations for over 5,000 years! I'm sure you've heard about Goji Berries, and Acai which ancient people used to stave off hunger on long treks, and to provide energy. Basically Oprah found out about it and now I'm pretty sure there is even an Acai flavored Absolute Vodka. But back to Agave Nectar. It's all natural, and one of those fads that people will swear by...even Oprah I'm sure! It's relatively low in calories, fat, and sugar. It looks and has the consistency of honey, but not quite the taste. It blends in with almost everything, so you can use it as a substitute for sugar when baking, or put it in your coffee or tea. They are even making different flavors of Agave like Maple, which is excellent in oatmeal and on waffles.

Who knows there may even be an Absolute Agave vodka soon.

Has anyone tried Agave Nectar yet?

    • About Me: Hey! I'm Gilly... after graduating from college I packed up my bags and moved to Australia. Upon arrival I was prepared for the obligatory shrimp on the barbie and a Fosters beer but there was none in sight. In fact Aussies call shrimp prawns, and Fosters is quite possible the worst beer to hit Australian shores... so my friends put some snags (sausages) on the barbie and handed me a tinny (beer) and introduced me to a world of food I never expected from the land down under. While there I tried authentic some authentic Aussie Bush Tucker including, alligator pie, kangaroo steaks, and camel bolognese...to name a few. My friends and I did road trips up the Australian East Coast, Tasmania, and New Zealand cooking food out the back of our campervan. I hope to share with you some stories and recipes from our travels. Enjoy!
