  • Mangoes Increase Body Heat!

Ripe mangoes are said to increase one's body heat, the reason why it is not advised to eat more than one, especially at this time when the temperature of the planet is just so up there.

I came across this piece of knowledge when a friend quipped that he doesn't care if he gets heat stroke from eating too much mangoes, he just has to buy all ten kilos of them. I could not blame him because Cebu is really known for its sweet mangoes, in fact, most of it are being exported to other countries, while a few are also processed, dried, and shipped to Western countries to be mixed with muesli.

However, in moderation, mangoes can be a cure for heat strokes (For full article, click here). Raw mangoes, according to Dr. Anjali Mukerjee of Health Total, is an excellent source of Vitamin C, as well as helps prevent excessive salt and iron loss. Salt helps retain fluid in the body, preventing dehydration.

I remember this news from Associated Press of "Poor man's Gatorade" saving the lives of Bangladeshi kids who are prone to suffer from diarrhea and dehydration especially during the hot season. The formula would be a pinch of salt, a fistful of sugar, and a half liter of water.

Aside from Vitamin C, which is more abundant in raw mangoes, it also is rich in Vitamin A (for good eyesight) and has traces of Vitamin E (for the skin, and a powerful antioxidant), Vitamin B (nerve health), and Vitamin K (for blood clot), and is a rich source of dietary fiber, which is beneficial for our morning habit.

So, as much as mangoes are good for our bodies, a mango a day, seems to be the best dosage, especially during El Niño.

    Do you eat enough mangoes?
