Heart-shaped watermelon! Only found in Japan.
As an avid food lover, I consider myself pretty darn adventurous. I'm okay with eating any sorta innards, appendages, and phalanges. Pretty much any portion of any mammal, avian, or marine animal. To me, it's really just about not wasting any portion of an animal... you know, sorta like the traditional Native American way of thinking.
However, my taste buds were sorely tested when I traveled overseas to various parts of Asia. People's diets are traditionally and primarily based on availability -- if meat isn't readily available, you look to other sources for protein -- things like tofu or even bugs... whatever's plentiful and around you, that's what's on the dinner table. Thus, I encountered all sorts of creepy crawlies served to me on a plate. Eek.

I now know that I'm pretty okay with eating any bug that has an exoskeleton. Case in point: deep fried scorpions served in a traditional Chinese restaurant in the middle of Tokyo... down the hatch. And it was pretty darn tasty, I'll admit. But I can't do grubs... anything that's wriggly... ew, just can't do it even if it was deep fried and you swear to me that it tastes like butter. *Shudder*
What about you, what's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

I'm terrified of scorpions. Couldn't see myself consuming any >.O
I don't think I've eaten too many 'odd' foods... I'm not that adventurous, I'll admit. Not when it comes to my nommage. But that watermelon is awesome, despite the price.
The weirdest thing I can think of offhand is ostrich jerky. It was pretty good!
I'm Chinese, 'nuff said
Octopus brain.
@teacupxgirl@xanga - Hah, agreed.
I think the weirdest thing I've ever eaten is chicken gizzard. I actually quite enjoy it. I know that isn't weird compared to some of the other foods in the world, as I've seen on Bizarre Foods.
Probably cactus.
i heard fried grubs taste like crunchy superbowl food. yumm cheeto grubs.
I came from the exotic island of Borneo, the land of cultural diversities. Have I eaten weird exotic food? Yes, everyday. There's the 'tempoyak' (fermented flesh of the pungent durian fruit), 'hinava' (pickled raw fish), 'nonsom' (comes in two version - fermented raw fishes and fermented slices of raw wild boar meat), etc.
Well, nothing like those pictures above ..
I guess frog legs?
A "cooked" cockroach. It tasted like a piece of salty, rancid nut that I shouldn't have put in my mouth.
Also a deep-fried moro bar. So it's not exotic, or really all that weird. But I thought I'd include it based on the shock I got from it. I didn't think chocolate or deep-fried anythings could ever do wrong, but boy, it was disgusting.
Oh, and chicken testicles. Please don't judge me? =)
Chocolate covered crickets/ants.
dead animals. ) :
Grilled to crispy fish bones and fish heads! So good...
Shark Fin, Snake, Toad leg, Sea Urchin, Chicken Feet, Duck's tongue, Cow's Tongue (which ones is enough), Pig intestine...i guess is part of the Chinese culture kakaka
i've eaten scorpions before in china :D a stinger got stuck in my tongue though. not fun.
Snake and Rocky Mountain Oysters *gag* (I will not explain, but I can tell you wikipedia has it as a topic).
@teacupxgirl@xanga - lol. Word.
I've never eaten anything weird... yet. And I have no plans of eating anything weird! O.O
It depends on what you qualify as 'weird'...I grew up thinking everyone ate pigs feet, chicken feet, cow tongue, cow brain and other yummy stuff. I haven't had scorpion (though I have been in that street where you probably took the pic at in Beijing and had a couple of things on a stick). I also had silk worms, duck tongue, most types of intestine, gizzards, chicken heart, liver (that's kinda weird), ants...fried, with lime and salt yummy. Uhm...I mean, I have had my fair share of stuff, to include sea urchin and live octopus, birds nest, shark fin (though after I found out how badly they treat the birds/sharks, I don't want to have it any more), and thousand year old egg. I haven't had Balut, and kinda never want to...ew, fetus and blood, that's where I draw the line. But as you can see...I eat a lot of stuff. lol.
BTW...I am not Asian of any form. I am Hispanic :)
crazy japanese. what will they do to their produce next?
weirdest thing i have ever eaten....chicharon bulaklak (deep fried pork intestines, think pork rinds but the're not rinds...) and isaw (barbecued chicken intestines)...
oh and i once ate dinuguan
Snails? Frogs? I'm Asian..Everything tastes like chicken after its fried and buttered up
the lining of a cow's stomach and coagulated pig's blood... delish!
