  • Daily Q: What's the Weirdest Thing You've Ever Eaten?

Heart-shaped watermelon!  Only found in Japan.

As an avid food lover, I consider myself pretty darn adventurous.  I'm okay with eating any sorta innards, appendages, and phalanges.  Pretty much any portion of any mammal, avian, or marine animal.  To me, it's really just about not wasting any portion of an animal... you know, sorta like the traditional Native American way of thinking.

However, my taste buds were sorely tested when I traveled overseas to various parts of Asia.  People's diets are traditionally and primarily based on availability -- if meat isn't readily available, you look to other sources for protein -- things like tofu or even bugs... whatever's plentiful and around you, that's what's on the dinner table.  Thus, I encountered all sorts of creepy crawlies served to me on a plate.  Eek.

I now know that I'm pretty okay with eating any bug that has an exoskeleton.  Case in point: deep fried scorpions served in a traditional Chinese restaurant in the middle of Tokyo... down the hatch.  And it was pretty darn tasty, I'll admit.  But I can't do grubs... anything that's wriggly... ew, just can't do it even if it was deep fried and you swear to me that it tastes like butter.  *Shudder*

What about you, what's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?
