Eating Like The Amish
The first weekend of May, Will & I celebrated our 1-year anniversary. We happen to be in Philly that weekend to visit his mother, so I suggested we go visit the Dutch Amish area of Landcaster county, since I have heard so much about it but had never been. Visiting that part of the country brought back memories of Scotland, and I realize as I get older, the more I appreciate the nature. Or that I am just more and more countrified.
We visited a local Amish farmer's market first.
(Will's mom gotten some toasted corns, and they were FAT-INDUCING & bad for dieting. )
Amish woman & baked goods!
(I am usually not a huge fan of beets, but these were pretty good - just not good enough for us to buy any).
I LOVE canned stuff. Don't ask me why.
MMMM.. cookies, country-style.
We drove around the community to check out the Amish farmers in action.
(We drove behind them for awhile and waved "hi" as they pass us by earlier.)
Many households lined-dry their clothes, which added pops of colors to the farm green in the backdrop.
He waved Hi!
We saw many of these - cows.
This household was hosting church/gathering, hence the large collection of carriages on the lawn. We ended up buy fresh brown eggs for the owner for the bargain price of $1.50 per dozen!
We ran across a roadside stand selling flowers on a honor systerm. In addition to using the horse-drawn carriages, we saw many Amish getting around on the bikes, in addition some that actually drove cars.
Chive flowers. I though they were so pretty.
Happy day.

Nope. I don't think we have Amish (or not so many and I never heard of ) in France. but their way of living is interesting I think. They live in the same world, but not on th same manner, and their way of life, even if it's so rude, can be very nice according to me (except religious principes, I mean living with nature, less confort but more links with earth).
Yes, I love their candles and soaps and blankets
Could the car driving ones actually be Mennonites? Used to go to a Mennonite farmer's shop in KS as a kid, loved the tastes that I only experienced there.
Great post!
I'd like to go to an Amish farmer's market sometime. It sounds and looks nice.
Yes this was included in our coach trip of America and Canada in 2008. It was quite interesting to learn more about the Amish.
I've never really been to Amish country. I love going to Amish stores, though! The variety of canned and baked goods is so neat! I am in love with the Oatmeal and Pumpkin Whoopie Pies. I look for them every time I go in there. Yummeh. :)
Honor system flowers?...
WAIT WAIT WAIT.
why is there a cash register in the first picture? i thought amish people shunned technology like it's the spawn of satan. D:
You most likely went to a Mennonite Farmer's Market. They are the ones that use electricity, but other than that -- they embrace the same values as the Amish.
ooh an amish market. Cool!
@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - I'm assuming she means that no one is supervising the area where they sell flowers. So you basically pick up what you want and leave the money due there. You're following the honor system if you don't leave 10 cents after picking up a ton of flowers. Unless they really are that cheap.
welcome to amish country. getting stuck behind buggies on the road on their way home from church is a real bitch.
