  • Cocktails That Are Hot Like Mexico, Rejoice!

    Thank you, Mexico.

It's that time of year again! That magical moment between finding an excuse for partying and partying just because it's summer.

It's the anniversary of the Mexican success over French troops invading their territory in 1862-not to be confused with the time Mexico lost their territory (what is now the American southwest) to America in 1848.

Despite the current political climate regarding this very territory and its inhabitants, there's no denying the fact that no matter who the US stops from entering our country, they can never inhibit the spread of that wondrous culture from the south: restaurant items with a Latin or Southwestern touch increased 17 percent from 2007 to 2009, according to the market research firm Mintel.

So while Arizona lawmakers continues guzzling that haterade, let's fill our bellies with something a bit spicier:

    Blackberry Poblano Margarita
    • 1 tablespoon fresh blackberries
    • 1 tablespoon diced poblano peppers, or 1 1/2 tablespoons, if very mild
    • 1 ounce silver tequila
    • 3/4 ounce Cointreau
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the blackberries and poblano peppers. Shake with the tequila, Cointreau, and ice. Strain into a martini glass.

    Saucy Gin & Tonic
    • 2 ounce gin
    • 5 ounce tonic water
    • 1 lime wedge
    • ice cubes frozen with saffron threads
Pour the gin and the tonic water into a highball glass almost filled with ice cubes. Stir well. Garnish with the lime wedge.

To further Mexify your other favorite drinks: Garnish your sangria with some fresh red chilies-and if you're really daring-throw in some ginger, ground cinnamon, sriracha chili sauce, or even Japanese wasabi!

Don't forget this Cinco de Mayo to be safe and thank Mexico for all they've given us since our inception!

Thank you, sexy Spanish names that make us want to sing.
