Snacks for Insomniacs
I confess, I've done my fair share of procrastinating. And that often leads to some late nights spent doing homework. Let's take tonight, for example. I haven't gotten as much work done as I should have, and now I am scrambling to get things done, a) before deadline, and b) so I can have fun this weekend and not be a slave to my schoolwork. But the biggest problem I have when avoiding my bed is: What do I eat?
Because it's imperative that I stay up and get my work done, I can't eat anything too heavy, otherwise I'll fall asleep, but I need something filling, so that I won't be grumpy. I need something energizing that will get me through the last few pages of my research paper, and caffeine just isn't cutting it. So, after looking on various Internet forums (apparently everyone has this issue, thank you college students of the world), I have compiled a list of relatively safe and healthy foods to eat late at night.- Bananas
- Cottage cheese
- Turkey
- Carrots
- Celery
- Spicy foods, such as salsa
- Hummus
- Rice cakes
And there you have it. On another note, staying up all night is not recommended! Trust me, I know.
But if you do....what do YOU eat?

I don't see bacon and chocolate cake on your list, so I'm going to discard it as incomplete.
I eat cheese and crackers, some fruit, maybe some veggies; but I must confess-- I do ice cream now and again. I also drink water like crazy-- but that's probably a nervous havoc.
I like some of the items on your list. I must say though, turkey? Turkey has a special enzyme in it that cause people to get sleepy, so I've heard. I've also heard that apples have a special enzyme that causes people to have energy and pineapple a special enzyme to help the immune system. -- But it still sounds really good, that turkey.
The only thing that sounds good to me late at night is Twinkies and/or Peanut Butter Oreos. Sad day.
This helps me out immensely. Thank you so much - you have no idea haha :) For me, what it often comes down to is "eat or fall asleep on textbooks" and I desperately find munchies like toast, which doesn't keep me awake long... hopefully, this list will keep me awake longer!
Tea and crackers. Sometimes ramen.
@NikBv@xanga - Agreed but I'd add anything sweet ( chocolate bars, ice cream etc) and a nice steak.
Sliced cucumbers. Energy, water, healthy. Perfect snack. And it can help fight off hunger pangs.
I read somewhere that apples do better to wake you up in the morning than caffeine, so perhaps you can try adding apples to your list?
crispy apples. the crisp and the sugar will keep you awake!
turkey is actually a sleep-inducing food.
things like granola cereals, fruit, and chocolate might help someone stay awake.
grilled cheese always gives me a boost in the midst of the night.
apples and gummy worms :D
apples apparently have natural caffeine. Personally, I think it's all the chewing that keeps me awake, haha. :D
Umm, Turkey contains Tryptophan. Many people claim that Tryptophan makes you drowsy. I'm not sure why it is on the list. I wouldn't recommend eating turkey if you are trying to stay up. I would stick to fruit.
L-tryptophan only acts as a sedative in very large quantities. That's large quantities of the enzyme itself, not just turkey. The protein in turkey also inhibits the effectiveness of l-tryptophan, and it isn't found in exceptionally high concentrations in turkey anyway.
What I'm driving at is that it's fine to have it as a late night snack.
A loaf of French bread, a pound of Gouda cheese, and lots of tea.
;D
@NikBv@xanga - agreed! : D
Cereal... yeah, cereal!
sounds like me tonite... in for an all nighter.. got my pack of java monster and sunchips next to me workstation.. heres to procrastination and final deadlines.
@NikBv@xanga - Hahahaha.
Aw. I'm sad. I was hoping from the title that it would be a post about foods to help relieve insomnia. Haha.
That said, I actually don't eat when I'm up all night (by choice or because I can't sleep). I always get stomach aches.
Right now I'm eating soup.
