Fondant's Bad Reputation Is Unfair!
I've noticed there are those who immediately react to fondant with a big yuck without even giving it a chance. I'll admit, I used to be one of those people who left it on my plate without even trying it. The truth is, I didn't know what it was. I knew it was some sort of edible material that was used for molding, so I thought it was like clay. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the impression a lot of people get.
Also, there are some kinds of fondant that don't taste that great. I'll be honest, Wilton has a bad reputation for making a bad tasting fondant. I tried it once, but I only ate a small flower and not a whole cake covered in it. I actually thought that little sugar flower tasted good.
That brings me to my next point. Fondant = sugar. I read the chemical description of fondant, and it's something about the sugar being supersaturated into a form where the crystals do something that makes it all smooth. I don't remember exactly. The point is, cake is sugar. Icing is sugar. Fondant is sugar, too. Why not give it a chance when you know you love sugar? A lot of people even make it with marshmallows, and those are delicious!
Anyone who has ever seen any kind of cake show or looked at wedding cakes knows that fondant is very popular. It gives a nice smooth cover to a cake that can also be decorated with many different options. It can also be molded and sculpted into different items.
I've decided, to make fondant more appetizing. I'm going to start calling it something else. Sometimes, having a positive image is all about connotation. Some words have a negative or a positive one, and to some people, fondant brings negative ideas to mind.
Here's my list of possible names I will start using (that I'm sure other people have called fondant already):
- rolled sugar
- sculpting sugar
- modeling sugar
- rolled icing
I think a cake covered in rolled icing sounds good as well as modeling sugar baby booties and sculpting sugar animals. I'll probably only use one term at a time for an entire cake though because I don't want to confuse people and make them think they are all different materials even though they are synonymous (or that I want them to think that).
Do you like fondant?

I don't like the taste or texture of it, but I *love* how it looks. I worked for a few years as catering staff, and routinely got pulled to help with cake cutting, so I got to be around LOTS of different cake/frosting/decoration combinations. Fondant is pretty, but real buttercream is the most delicious thing ever. It's not a name thing for me, since I understand how fondant is made & what it's purpose is; I just genuinely have not found a fondant I have enjoyed eating.
I use fondant for cakes, its brilliant,i think it gives a better finish to butter cream and looks almost classier.
ive used the Dr otker one which isn't too bad :),but our local cake shop makes their own,i buy from there.
i have tried a few where the fondant has tasted bitter or very eggy and that was just urm...gross,but you should defiantly give it a try it is so much easier!
I watch the Cake Boss and Ultimate Cake off on TLC. I am addicted to it. But I have never made Fondant, and don't know how to.
Our local bakery also makes and sells fondant. I've had cakes with fondant (both from bakeries and homemade) and I've always liked it!
I love fondant! The texture, the taste, the look, I enjoy everything about fondant!
my friend makes the best cakes and shes mastered the art of fondant and trust me whenever she brings a cake around everyone ditches their manners and grabs a fork and tears at it, the fondant tastes good, but hers is the only ive tried
It depends on who makes it. My cousin makes it and it tastes great. Other people make it and it tastes not so good.
Fondant is made in a very similar way compared to fudge.
I don't like it, mainly because of the texture I believe. It also seems to overpower the cake itself all of the times that I have had it. The same can be said for regular run of the mill frosting. The proportions need to be right! That being said, I'm sure there is fondant that I would enjoy eating. It is sugar, after all.
Fondant is fine with me.
i love fondant! bring on the fondant covered cakes :D
Its
DELICIOUS!I'd eat it like I breathe air, If I could.
Fondant tastes terrible. Like stale, flattened marshmallows.
I don't mind the look of fondant but it tastes like it looks, which is thick sugar. It's kind of unappetizing. I had to choose a wedding cake and alot of the bakeries only made fondant cakes. I absolutely love the look of traditional cakes with buttercream icing and whatnot. Thankfully, we were able to find a bakery which would cater to our wants. Fondant is nice if you want to play around and be creative but it is easy to go overboard with fondant and then you are stuck with too much of it.
@arenfro@xanga - Hah. You said it correctly.
i don't think i've ever had fondant, but i see it on cake boss all the time and think it looks delicious!
I've never had it but I've had a cake with butter cream that was so smooth it really looked like fondant! haha Best of both worlds there I guess. :)
I've never had it, but I always thought it looked so cool on Ace of Cakes, I've always wanted to try some! Never knew it was unpopular with some people
I've had a piece of cake from some bakery in orange county (can't remember the name) that had light green fondant, and it complimented the cake taste-wise! That was the only time I've had it though.
ick i hate fondant. i don't mind if there are little flowers and what not made out of fondant that i can pick off, but don't cover the whole goddam cake in the stuff. it's icky and then all you're left with is dry cake. although i will admit that i love watching shows like 'ace of cakes' and of course most of that wouldn't be possible without fondant. so i guess that makes me a hypocrite lol.
I think sculpting sugar sounds best. I have a cake decorating business, but I rarely use fondant. It does give a beautiful polished look, but my customers usually prefer buttercream frosting due to the taste.
I LOVE FONDANT!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never understood what fondant was. I just see a piece of cake on my plate waiting to be devoured. >D
Fondant tastes so awful..... but looks so polished and beautiful. I find that it really is a trade-off.
I like how it tastes. But if I was constructing the best tasting cake eva, I definitely wouldn't cover it in fondant. There are so many other icings that taste so much better, and tastes rule over looks to me when it comes to cake. (A serious matter.)
