  • Are Fast Food Restaurants Going Too Far?

Obesity, diabetes and heart disease are constantly on our minds nowadays.  We can't go a day without reading or hearing about how overweight we all are and that we need help.  Fast food chains don't seem to be hearing the outcry.

Soda may soon be taxed in some U.S. states, trans fat is our arch nemesis and calories counts yet fast food restaurants keep dishing out the calories.

In a report by CNN, Kat Kinsman discusses the new offers at restaurants such as KFC, McDonald's and Burger King.  You can find her full report here

One of the sandwiches mentioned in Kinsman report is the new KFC Double Down.  This is not your conventional sandwich.  Those on the Atkins Diet may appreciate it though.  In place of bread, there are two fried chicken filets.  In between the chicken "buns" is cheese and bacon.  When I saw the commercial the a few days ago, even before I read this article, I knew it was going to cause concern.

Obviously fast food is not good for us and we know they are always tring to appeal to us in a creative, mouth-watering way.  Personally, I do not find this in any way appetizing but I am sure there are a lot of individuals out there who cannot wait to sink their teeth into the Double Down.

Here are some other offers Kinsman mentions:
Taco Bell's Chicken Ranch Taco Salad (54 grams of fat, 910 calories)
Luther Burger (Minor league baseball stadium off with a burger stuffed in a Krispy Kreme doughnut, 45 grams of fat, 1,000 calories)
Hardee's Monster Thickburger (95 fat grams, 1,320 calories)

What do you think - have the fast food chains gone too far or not?  Would you try any of these meals?

I work at McDonalds. The one I work as is infested with roaches. I believe that's enough said.

I saw an advertisement online for the KFC Double Down and almost threw up a little in my mouth. Nobody needs to eat TWO fried chicken breast patties sandwiching cheese and bacon.

  • PervyPenguin@xanga

Seriously, and Americans wonder why they're so fat...

  • kuroshitsuji@xanga

What do you mean? They can serve whatever they want to, it's YOUR decision to eat it or no.

  • shunny@xanga

Yeah the KFC Double Down is pretty ridiculous. Ill just stick to the good old classic fried chicken if I wanted fried chicken.

  • DeathzDezign@xanga

@kuroshitsuji@xanga - i completely agree...it's up to the person to give in and actually consume what they're offering...fast food companies are just making a living, just like cigarette companies. in my opinion, there's no point in complaining about how fat they're making Americans get, because it's up to America to turn away from the temptation, and/or do something about their weight problems. everything should be done in moderation, and that includes indulging in the unhealthy stuff.

CNN is the fast food of news.

It's a heaping serving of emotion and outrage, which, afterward, when you're looking over the facts, still leaved you feeling empty inside.

Fast food places, like CNN, always have and always will appeal to the uncontrollable urges of its consumer (comfort food in the case of fast food places and attention-grabbing "shock"-perhaps relating to something we've all recently seen commercials for-in the case of CNN)...it's up to the educated consumer to say NO.

None of them sound too appetizing to me actually. Personally, I think the soda tax is a little unfair. If the government wants to get us to cut down, they could start by monitoring fast food a little more. I don't mean change it completely and dull it down, but do little things to make it just a little healthier. I think the part of the healthcare bill that requires restaurants to list the number of calories in one item is a pretty good start.

i used to work at KFC and just the though of the amount of grease in that thing makes me wanna puke! DON"T EAT AT KFC people!

  • feelslikejuly@xanga

If you don't like it, don't eat it. It's not our job to decide what people eat. Please don't go on and suggest that the government step in and decide what we can or can not eat.

  • feelslikejuly@xanga

@kuroshitsuji@xanga - amen. I'm sick of hearing about people telling others what to eat. It's OUR job to be responsible for ourselves. If we can't make proper decisions then that's our own fault.

  • kachino@xanga

It's up to you to eat what you think is good for you ... as simple as that.

It's not the restaurant's fault that people are overweight. People CHOOSE to eat out. No restaurant is holding a GUN to their heads! There are plenty of other restaurants that cater to people who are health-conscious. If you would just find them, go there, and support them financially with your food dollars, they would open more businesses coming to a restaurant near you.

  • wideopenskies@xanga

They keep pressing it on Americans because Americans keep buying the food.

    How that hard to understand?
  • Erika_Steele@xanga

@kuroshitsuji@xanga - I agree.  It is not up to fast food places or the government (especially not the government) to regulate what people eat.  It's not like the restaurants force people to eat it.

  • pianokeysKTbug@xanga

I would try the Double down once. Just to see how it tastes. No one's making me. I can resist. But the gov't should NOT mess with fast food to make it healthier. About once every two months I want me a really unhealthy value meal, and if you get in my way, well, I hope you have life insurance. People need to get their own healthy food, not expect fast food places to make their crap healthier. It's kind of like trying to get bullet companies to make them less lethal. If people would use responsibility and common sense, then everyone would be a lot skinnier and McDonald's would be a lot less rich.

The fast food chains are just trying to make money. It sucks that they offer us this crap, but at least they're not forcing us to eat it.

i don't blame the fast food chains they're in the business of dollars not ethics, it's the people who are either ignorant, oblivious, or careless about what they put into their bodies that keep these places in business.  that KFC double down really just sounds like something someone create on a dare like "heh heh lets replace the bread with friend check and see if anyone eats it."  ...that's not even mentioning the atrocity KFC tries to pass of as "chicken"!  sorry, i'm a little bit heated about this topic, if you couldn't tell.

  • EpsilonCassiopeiae@xanga

Oh, it looks as if there's going to be a chicken-cheese-bacon party in my mouth. Om nom.

  • babybug329@xanga

@CrimsonxIllusion@xanga - Oh wow...that's disgusting but it does happen.  I used to work in at McDonalds...but we didn't have an infestation of cockroaches thankfully.  (Can't say the same about coworkers washing their hands according to procedure, however.)  I have heard of other locations' horror stories though.

People, get a grip.  Just because a restaurant offers it, doesn't mean you have to eat it.  Personally I wouldn't try KFC's new "chicken sandwich."  I am not likely to try the above mentioned fatty meals even though I do eat at fast food restaurants.  I try to stick to hamburgers while at hamburger joints (with one patty only...except I can't resist a double double at In-N-Out), only with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and ketchup.  I prefer not to eat fried chicken...I only really like my grandpa's fried chicken and he's long gone now so no worries on eating fried chicken.

  • x__BeautiifulxDiisaster__x@xanga

just reading the descriptions made me wanna hurl

  • mz_d0rkabl3@xanga

No, you can decide whether you want to supersize that meal or not.

We have the freedom to NOT eat fast food.
McD's had a veggie burger option once upon a time, but nobody wanted to eat it so it was discontinued. Fast food is supposed to be unhealthy, I don't think anyone's thinking "hell yea I'm gonna go to McDonald's / Burger King / KFC for a healthy nutritious salad!"

I think it's ridiculous that some parents tried to sue McDonald's for making their kids obese instead of blaming themselves and recognizing their own bad parenting

No, fast food restaurants aren't making us fat, lack of education and motivation to eat right is making us fat.
