  • Daily Q: What Do You Do For Food During a Blackout?

Just last night we had a viscious storm here in 'rain-city' Vancouver. There was a power outage where I lived that lasted from 2pm in the afternoon to 11pm at night. The problem was that all our household appliances, including the stoves are electicity powered. Boredom and darkness I can deal with, but not hunger!v

So, my resourceful Asian parents whipped out the portable stove, raided the fridge for anything that spoils easily,  and we had hot pot for dinner.
The beauty of hot pot is that you cook your own food, forcing you to eat slowly while engaging in conversations with everyone else (such as: "who took my fishball?" and "add more bok choy!")

I didn't realize how long it has been since we had the opportunity to have a family dinner that lasts longer than 15 minutes, as everyone is usually in a rush to do something "more important". We sat around the hot pot for an hour and half since there was no distractions of TV, internet, video games, etc.

What do you do for food during a black out? How often do you have family dinners?
