  • Marijuana: The Beverage?!

    Traditional Kava

A friend who recently returned from West Palm Beach came singing the praises of an intoxicant I hadn't yet heard of (you can imagine my horror): kava.

A crop from the pepper family (OK, the title of this post is a bit of a misnomer), kava has been a known treatment for short term anxiety which doesn't disrupt mental clarity in the western Pacific for centuries where it's also been included in traditional, ritualistic ceremonies as well.

As is often done in America, in recent history, this ancient rite of passage was converted into its own form of nightlife-the Kava Lounge-such as the one my friend went to in West Palm Beach where it can be ingested both by smoking or drinking. Clubs of this nature went up all over the coasts of the US quite quickly-the American partyer is a versatile one in need of constant change-although if you look for one now in the NYC area, there's nary one anywhere around.

Quite clearly a result of some studies in the early part of our century suggesting the dangers of the source of anxiety relief, it seems the only place you can still try the stuff is in West Palm Beach.

If you can't make it to Florida, head on out to India, where bhang (buds of the female cannabis plant consumed as a beverage) is legal in many states. Here is a fab recipe for Bhang-Marijuana Milk-which seems to wipe out scratchy-throat coughing *and* cottonmouth in fell swoop.

    Mmmm...Marijuana Milk....

That Marijuana Milk recipe looks pretty delicious if you ask me.

Would you try/have you tried kava or bhang, or any similarly substances?
