One of my favorite parts of studying in Paris was learning how to pronounce the names of French foods and wines. Why? It's probably the best way to position yourself as a complete food snob among your friends and comrades. Also, it's incredibly amusing to have American family members come visit and letting them fend for themselves with the French waiters. Not that I'm soulless or evil, but everyone needs a good laugh every now and then, right?! But it's not just French foods that are hard to pronounce...Here's a list from the Chicago Tribune of
commonly mispronounced foodie words.
- Bruschetta (broo-SKEH-tah)
- Gnocchi (NYOH-kee)
- Gyro (YEER-oh)
- Huitlacoche (wheet-lah-KOH-chay)
- Pouilly-Fuisse (poo-yee fwee-SAY)
- Mole (MOH-lay)
- Paczki (POONCH-key)
- Pho (fuh)
- Prosciutto (proh-SHOO-toe)
- Sake (SAH-kay)
Which foods/cooking terms get your tongue in a twist??

I don't know any french, must experience some food...
When I was little I couldn't say Spaghetti for the life of me. It always came out like "Ska-bet-e".
8. Pho (fuh) -- D:
haha i had mole chicken today.
you knw what , " Worcestershire".
a lot of people pronounce it funny .
@takoyuki@xanga - How DO you say that? I'm still trying to figure it out.
my dad always says "gyro" like "JUY-ro." makes me mad, haha.
@HalifaxGurly@xanga - it sounds like wuss-ter-shure (but leave out the sound of the "e" at the end) i love saying this word in the kitchen haha
10. Sake (SAH-kay)
i'm totally splitting hairs here, but since the trib wanna be food snobs (can't stand food snobs!), that 'kay' should really be a 'keh.'
