If you have ever met someone from Philadelphia, you know how much pride they have in their food. When I think of the City of Brotherly Love, I don't often think of food but apparently those from Philly beg to differ.
Philadelphians are obsessed with the foods below and will argue that these foods can only be good if made by a Philadelphian in the Philadelphia region.
Philly Cheese Steak
They may have cornered the market on this one. The word "Philly" is a natural precursor to "Cheese Steak" and will always be that way even if the cheese steak is made in San Diego. There is a very specific way to order a cheese steak when in Philly, "Two, whiz, with," meaning two cheese steaks with cheese whiz and onions.
Soft Pretzels
This one I don't understand at all. The soft pretzels from Philadelphia are a little soggy and lack flavor but Philadelphians are still overly proud of their soft pretzels. If you drench your soggy, flavorless pretzels in mustard, you may be mistaken for a native.
TastykakesTasty cakes are better than yodels, ring dings and Twinkies yet are not nearly as popular. Krimpets are probably my favorite but they have a variety of other treats like cupcakes, pies, juniors and more. If you come across a box, you have to try them!
Have you had any of these Philly foods? Am I leaving any out?

I need to travel to Philly to enjoy a real philly cheese steak.
I live in Philly and yes, we do have the best cheesesteaks. But, of course, it depends where you get it in Philly. And you have to get it with the Cheese Whiz at least once. I get it every time. :D
how about Amoroso rolls? that's an integral part of the cheesesteak or any hoagie. Any Yuengling and Yards beers, not to mention dozens of small breweries. Tomato pies are local, I believe. And you can't forget porkroll and scrapple!
All this said, i'm a vegetarian, but I've enjoyed all of this at one time or another.
omg, krimpets. brings back memories of 6th grade and maniac magee.
you forgot wooder ice in churry, blueburry, or strawburry.
Perhaps, the vendor you got the pretzel from had an off day. I'm born and raised in Philly and a soft pretzel is my favorite snack of all time. It's cheap and very filling.
Not all Philadelphia's cheesesteaks are amazing, but I think Tony Luke's in Oregon Ave come pretty close to being amazing. Though I can't stand cheese wiz, provolone is the way to go.
But I love Tastykakes, my friends from New York always stock up here before going back home!
i live about an hour or two away from philly, and i'm so glad i get to enjoy tastykakes :) mmmm i love kandy kakes!
Scrapple is a big thing in Philly. I'm not a fan of it but it's exactly what it sounds like.
Water ice. I missed free Rita's water ice on the first day of spring :(
As for the pretzels, it depends where you get them from. My favorite ones are from Philly Soft Pretzel Factory with cheeze whiz. DO NOT buy them off the dude selling them on a corner...you don't where his hands have been.
Candied Irish Potatoes are also a "Philly Thang", as well as Scrapple, Amoroso Rolls, Soft Pretzels and Wooder Ice. It's not Italian Ice, it's wooder ice.
Peanut Chews are a Philly Thang as well.
don't forget scrapple. i highly advise that anyone who has never had scrapple look up how it is prepared prior to trying to cook it. my ex-boyfriend decided to try it and he's not from philly. he ended up with a pudding-like consistency (i don't know how) and, needless to say, it was not a pretty picture.
i don't know why tastykake doesn't expand. i lived on krimpets and kandy kakes from age like 4 to 7. they are so much better than the other brands!
Geno's > Pat's\
that is all
@WHOAlizz@xanga - agreed.
I guess it's not really a "Philly" thing, but I'd die without Wawa.
Wawa > 7 eleven
I am from Philly...your list was good...what about Nick's RB there is on in South Philly it is the original and it is simply the best! and of course don't forget aobut Strohman's bread!
