  • Have You Ever Not Left A Tip?

To all you out there that think tipping 15% is a maximum for excellent service, think again.

Your servers know that good service is their job, but did you know that tipping well for good service is your job as a patron? Because it is, if you have made the choice to go out to a restaurant to eat, you have made the choice to tip in addition to your check. 20% is the new average for GOOD service, 15% for average 10% for poor service, such as, getting an order obviously wrong, being rude, or ignoring a table.

The only exclusion to the tipping rule is blatant disregard for a table, a server who ignores you, doesn't take your order in a timely fashion for just seems to be avoiding your table could be worthy of a non-tip, but please remember we live on tips and tips alone, so be kind drop another dollar or two down on the table, it might just mean that we can make rent that month.

Has anyone ever not left any tip at all?

nope.  I always tip, even if the service sucks.
I'm a hairstylist, so I count on tips to help pay my bills too,
and I know how much it sucks when someone doesn't tip.

  • lgsbeerreviews

No, I always tip a little bit even if the service sucks. If it sucks really, really bad, I'll just tip them my change after I pay the tab.

  • ccarothers@xanga

Yes, the server completely ignored our table for 20 minutes.  It was obvious we were in his section and he didn't didn't even come by to offer us drinks or take our order.  We had to get the manager and when the guy finally took our order, he was really rude.  He was talking to the people he knew at the table next to ours about us.  He was the absolute worst server I have ever had and I didn't feel bad about not tipping him.

Once when I was an undergraduate.  We felt really bad so we drew the waiter a picture on a napkin and wrote Tip: Have a nice day.  The next time we went the same waiter was there, we tried to hide but he saw us.  He ended up waiting on our table.  We apologized to him profusely.  He smiled at us and said that it was the best tip he had ever gotten and that we weren't even in his section.  He told us that how the students that go to the university that he attended liked to come in and give him a hard time about his sexual orientation.  He was having a bad day and thinking about tipping until he waited on our table.  He kept our tip and hung it on his refrigerator.   That was the only time I didn't leave a tip.  I don't even not leave a tip if I get bad service (they will get the bare minimum).

Once, but that was only because our server was a total bitch from the start and didn't even check on us to get our orders until we had to tell someone else to tell her to take it. I hate doing that, but that wasn't cool at all. I'm a nice person so I'll usually tip that 15% even when the service was subpar, but she defintely pressed buttons.

  • Nellie0x@xanga

LOLLL! My sister and I did this not too long ago.. We didn't leave one because we didn't have extra cash on us besides our cards. I still feel bad but oh well.

  • PeriwinkleAdonis@xanga

If I get shitty service, especially attitude, they don't get a tip. I don't owe them anything, just like they don't owe me good service. If I happen to get great service, good service, even decent service, they'll happen to get a tip. Even crappy service and a polite person will do. It's not that hard to smile.

  • bonsaijapan098@xanga

I have never not left a tip, but I seriously think restaurants just include the tip into the cost of the food. Shitty service? Just don't go to that restaurant anymore. No food is worth shitty service.

  • blackspiders@xanga

I've waited tables, so I know how it can be... I'll always tip something, but if they're just plain horrible to me I'll leave them less than 10%. Possibly just my change. Luckily, I've never gotten service that was that bad, so I usually leave at least 15%, more for really excellent service.

@matchstickfireflies@xanga - Always... meaning you never tip? :/

  • matchstickfireflies@xanga

@blackspiders@xanga - Yes. The only people who get tips in this country are hookers and prostitutes. We just don't do it.

I tip based on the services provided.. however, I'm not into the idea of subsidizing the wages for a restaurant's employees. Don't get me wrong though, I do still tip more than my friends' and families' ~10%. I just don't think it justifying employees getting minimum wage and then they work their asses off to make ends meet.

I do like the models that other countries have. In fact, tipping in most places is considered rude and offensive.

  • Viola_F@xanga

on the few occasions where i actually felt bad even paying for my service and food at that place.

  • mizz_chan@xanga

I tip 10 - 15% typically. When I was in Asia this winter though, I was warned to not leave a tip. It's not customary there and especially in China you are not allowed to tip at restaurants!

  • Senlin@xanga

One time, my friends and I received TERRIBLE service from a Chinese restaurant. We were first seated at one table, then asked to move to another table, and the waitress snapped at us to move all of our dishes, tea cups, etc.! Then they proceeded to neglect us for ~30 minutes. So we left her a small tip. And guess what? She FOLLOWED US OUT OF THE RESTAURANT DEMANDING A BIGGER TIP? WTF!?!?!?! We got the hell away from there and never went back. What a bitch.

  • kairi_kawaii@xanga

We don't usually tip food serving here. A lot of places already include service charge on your check, so it's actually not needed. You can if you want to, but it's not necessary.

  • SexInChurch@datingish

If the service is horrible, yes you don't get a tip. It's not my job to subsidized your wage if you do a horrible job. I once had a server drop half our dinner on the floor and still gave it to us with half the dinner on the plate with a response "your mash potatoes dropped" Had us waiting 45 minutes in an empty restaurant midday before taking our drink order. My entire table refused to give a tip.

  • absurd_glam@xanga

@Senlin@xanga - haha omg did you give her a bigger tip then?

  • my_final_username@xanga

Yes we have not tipped once or twice on holiday,  since service charge has be included.

If the food and service is poor we don't go back,  one local restuarant has lost business,  we been going there for 25+ years plus, even before I was born my parents went there.

  • Winter__Raven@xanga

I'm getting pretty sick of these "Leave a tip" blogs. Frankly it's your choice to work for less than minimum wage, and if you don't get at least minimum wage at the end of your pay period (tips included) then talk to your boss because they have to make up the difference. You will always get at least minimum wage.

No, it's not our job to tip you. It's a courtesy. Personally, I rarely will stiff a waitress (never had to do it to a waiter, they've never been terrible to me). But if you're not getting the correct amount in tips, then look in a mirror and honestly judge how you are personally doing. Don't wine and moan, because when you're talking about being broke you're preaching to a choir.
  • Cambios@xanga

    @SexInChurch@datingish - Nice!

I always tip generously if the server is friendly and attentive, even if the food is crappy. However 10% for poor service? Yeah, right. I've never not tipped but if the
service is bluntly bad the tip will be so small they'll know I was
    irritated and didn't just forget.

By the way to cite my source, I'll use the United State Department of Labor.

If you didn't know that, then you should re-educate yourself about your job and your rights to fair pay. And let me repeat myself that tipping is a COURTESY...not a job.
  • ranranbolly@xanga

I've forgone tipping twice. The first time was because it took her an hour to seat us (at an empty restaurant), an hour to take our orders, and half our to pick up our bill. She was also pretty rude. The other time, we were stuck at a place we went to regularly with a waiter who seated everyone before us (that means everyone who arrived afterwards) and took our orders last, after having long conversations with every attractive male customer at the place.

  • SakuraStarlight@xanga

I've forgotten to leave a tip before, but I don't downright not leave one unless I truly forget. I don't take the time to count up 15%, but my boyfriend and I usually leave about 3 or 4 dollars, so do my parents. We don't eat at pricey restaurants, so three or four is usually about right.
