I'm really not a morning person. The only thing that un-crankifies me and gets me going is a nice cup (or two) of steaming hot coffee. I usually have the pot set on a timer so I'll have it ready for me each morning, but on some days, I like to head out and get a nice latte or cappucino just for a change.
I don't like to hate on big coffee chains or anything (since I visit them aplenty), but I really love the small little mom and pop coffee shops. Not only do you get more attentive service, but you're more likely to find a barista who can create some amazing coffee art.
One friend, who's worked in a coffee shop for years, told me about Coffee Fest, a tradeshow for specialty coffee. One of the highlights of the show is the Millrock Free-Pour Latte Art Competition. This is the real deal, drawing baristas from around the world to showcase their artistic skills, and has a $2500 grand prize. I'd love to go and watch them do all this crazy cool stuff.
Can you create coffee art? Don't you want this stuff in your cup every time you order some coffee?

I wish I drank coffee.
haha...that would make me happy in the morning.
I would LOVE to see this in my cup when I order coffee.
The only coffee "art" I've ever seen is when I pour the creamer in and my mom pretends to read my fortune...
Cool image!
I saw a contest for this in my Food Network magazine!
I don't drink coffee, but I would love to do this!:DI've never tried...I'm more of an "add-the-creamer-quick-then-run-out-the-door" type of gal. lol, these are really cool though!
that's awesome. i want to see my face drawn in my coffee! haha
i worked as a barista for a long time and never quite mastered latte art. its harder than you would think...
Interesting art. I probably wouldn't want it, but I take my coffee black with sugar.
Coffee art is pretty awesome. I would be sad to drink it and ruin it though.
I got a lovely heart in my coffee once on Valentine's Day in our local shop. It was, indeed, awesome. I hated to drink it.
I would love to learn do that!
That is so cool! :)
art on coffee is amazing! this will definitely make my morning more enjoyable and less sleepy =D
cute!
that would make me want to drink coffee now.
I can make a really bad rosetta and a decent heart. I haven't tried making anything else. I should...
omgosh so cute! :)
I prefer the cat!
I've never tried to create coffee art! I should start trying this in my morning coffee, I love the idea, sooo adorable!
Wow! That looks so cool! I would love to learn that!
i love decorating!! you should see some of my frappe creations, but i've never tried it on lattes and cappuccinos.. hmmmmm =)
imma start practicing. maybe this will attract some attention to the the quaint little coffee shop i work at. =D
My sister got a leaf drawn in her coffee when we went to Inversion coffee house yesterday. It was pretty sweet. =)
yesss although i think with that competition they only compete with traditional designs [heart, rosetta], not faces. could be thinking of something else though
That's bad ass. Unfortunately, here Fivebucks/Starfucks has forced the local mom & pops out of business. Whenever I go on a trip, I try to find a nice mom&pop place.
You're absolutely right--better coffee, oftentimes better service and more personality both of the place itself and the employees... Starfucks to me is Corporate Coffee for Corporate Go-Getters. I don't know how many times I'd see the stereotypical "power suit" (or "power pants-suit" for the female PowerHeads) stride confidently up to the counter and rattle off: "IwantaquadnowhipsugarfreenonfatthreepumpcaramelmacchiatoextrahotandI'minahurry," or something like that. Fuck, man. Crazy. How can you expect a barista to be personable and friendly when they've got a line around the block of busy, important PowerHeads demanding complex coffee drinks and wanting them 5 mins ago???
