This always seems to be a topic of conversation at the dinner table. Tipping is a very big deal in the U.S. but my understanding is that it isn't really expected in other parts of the world. I still tipped when I was in Italy though!
I usually tip about 20% unless I haven't had the most fabulous service, which is when I tip between 15% to 18%. I do admit that I've left the table without giving a tip at all though but that is when the service has been so atrocious, like when the waitress made fun of me for ordering a certain dish or when I was mistreated because I wasn't spending over $200 on my meal.

When we went to USA and Canada in 2008 it was shock on how much we had to pay for tip and service charge
In Mexico we kept dropping the odd $1 since we went all inclusive. I would be tipping more often if I went on holiday by myself.

I think when people have jobs where they get tips, they're usually better tippers.
I generally tip 20%. I'll do 25-30% if it's a place we frequent often or if the service was exceptionally good. For substandard service, it's more like 10-15%. And if the service really sucked, I'll just leave a handful of loose change and never go back.

I'm sorry to all the waiters and waitresses but I don't just tip because of obligation. If you take the order, drop off the food, and bring the bill...that's your job....if you do more than that, you'll get a tip.
But getting my order right and actually getting the food to me...thats...um...in your job description.
In South Africa we tip 10% max and it's still by choice. however we the dinner part is more than 5 people resturants place a service fee more than 10% which is mandatory.
I give whatever I feel like giving. If the server is doing a crappy job then I won't give anything.
What I tip also depends on what type of restaurant I'm in.
It's not a set percentage, it's whatever I can afford or whatever I feel the server deserves.
I'm too lazy to do the math, but I usually tip an even 10 dollars (Which, for a nice meal for my husband and I being around 30 bucks, that's about 30%) But I will tip 10 dollars even if our meal comes to 20 bucks total (Which is a 50% tip!). Occasionally if it's a cheaper meal (like the 20 dollar one) I'll just tip 5 dollars... but that's still 25% which is pretty darn good.) Anything under 5 dollars just seems like kind of a slap in the face to my waiter/waitress I think.

wow. i am kind of shocked at how low some of you tip! i ALWAYS tip 20%.. and if i received exceptional service, it can be upwards to 30%. while i was in college i worked as a server and a bartender, and yes while serving customers is part of our job description, our pay checks always came out to zero after taxes due to super low wages.

I'm a waitress at a Cracker Barrel and we usually end up getting around 20% of our total sales in tips by the end of the day, although sometimes more or less depending on the day. We usually get angry at people who tip less than 20% because, even though you don't see everything we do, we work our asses off... plus that's all the money we make. We make less than 3 dollars an hour otherwise and that's usually all gone by the time taxes go through. Just move the decimal over to the left one place and multiply the number by 2. Unless you get a server who is terrible, this is now the exceptable tipping rate. If you can't afford that, don't ever eat at a sit-down restaurant because we consider it to be stealing our service if you don't leave a proper tip. I usually end up tipping way more than that when I go out, mainly because I know how much the job sucks and all the stupid people servers have to deal with.
@Baseballchik138@xanga - Well I'm from Canada, and this isn't the case for us. Only 3 provinces allow employers to pay less than minimum; British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec.
For British Columbia the rule applies to new employees with less than 500hrs of experience. For Quebec workers that get paid tips earn $1 less than minimum; and for Ontario only servers that work in establishments that are allowed to serve alcohol get paid $1.25 less than min.

I worked at a restaurant for over a year so I always leave a good tip just out of common courtesy. They work for 2 something an hour- your tip is how they make their money.
I feel like everyone should work at a restaurant at some point in their lives.
Very good service we give 20%; Average 15%, Poor service 0%...being rude or never come back to see how we are doing, or messing up the order.
People have lost sight of what a TIP actually is. It started off as telling the server "I'm giving you this extra money because of the good job you did! I thank you for such great service, here have some money!". Now it's all bout percentages. Where did the quality of work go and get replaced w/ expected extra income from the guests? Rude. If you give good service, I give you a tip, and a good tip (which any tip is a good tip because it's the principal, for me)...because I think you deserve one in the first place. If you suck at giving me service, I'm not going to reward you....what's the point of a tip then? It's to show your gratitude, I hate how society and companies make it expected now. Easy.
