  • Wine & Cheese Party!

My fiance and I had a little wine and cheese party last night for just the two of us. We went to the liquor and wine store and ended up buying five bottles of wine. We bought a Spanish red wine, a Californian Cabernet Sauvignon, a French red wine, an Italian red wine, and a German Riesling.

Our cheese selection included Dubliner, Parmesan, Asiago, and Goat cheese. We also had pepperoni and crackers. It was a magnificent spread and I thoroughly enjoyed the wine and cheese combination. We of course did not drink all four bottles of wine, but we did consume two of them.

I'm usually a beer drinking girl, but recently I've been drinking more wine because I want to learn more about it. There is so much to know about wine and I can't wait to actually understand all the different types and to really know what I'm drinking. I've been going to free wine tastings every Friday night at a local wine store near my apartment. They usually have three wines that they sample and the people there are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I look forward to keeping up the Friday tradition.

Do you know a lot about wine? Do you drink wine often?

I love wine but I don't know much about it and don't drink it often because I can't afford it. But I'd love to do this and add some small fruits to the spread, like strawberries or grapes.

I wonder what can be used as a substitute for wine....I don't drink alcohol....

Riesling is my favorite!  Glad you tried it, I think everyone should.  And it's typical to do fruit instead of meat at a tasting, especially berries.  Last night I had a platter with my husband and we had a bleu cheese, some Havarti, and some Gouda (definitely put the last one on your list, it's the best!).  It was served with blueberries, raspberries, and grapes.  Tres delicious.

A friend once said to me, "if you want to learn about wine, start drinking it."
I've lived by this for a while now, and it's been a fun journey.

Explore cheese also ... I've had a rich education in cheese from a catering job.  There is a rich world of cheese flavors out there.  Pate, cured meats, this world is delicious for wine drinkers.
@xpika1x@xanga - Nothing will match the complexity of flavors except for complete dishes.  That being said, there is amazing food out there to enjoy.  In everything that you see around you, there exists a person who devotes their life to that one thing.  Want to talk ice cream?  I'll spin your head around talking about recipes, flavor combinations, techniques, maintaining freshness ... there are too many things ... Actually, tea is a very interesting thing to explore, although, the mouthfeel aspect doesn't seem to be able to match anything alcoholic, but perhaps that's just because I've explored spirits more than I have tea.

@orcofdoom@xanga - Hmmm, I live by that rule for everything except alcohol. Mostly due to religious restrictions I restrain myself. I do try everything else though (besides pork also) with that same vigor. I have definitely explored teas and coffees, and many different juices to pair with foods though. I guess I should explore for us non-drinkers simple and complex pairings of fine foods and drinks! =)

I have discovered that I really like wine, and am currently exploring its many possibilities with my wonderful boyfriend's amazing support!
