Beware of the Ides of March!
Monday is March 15th, or the Ides of March. In the Shakespearean play, Julius Caesar, a soothsayer warned Caesar of the ides and to watch his back that day. Caesar laughs it off but he ends up a bit unlucky on the ides as he was betrayed by everyone – Et tu, Brute?
Perhaps if Caesar had feasted on some lucky foods, he would have avoided betrayal and death.
Well, maybe not, but if you are feeling a little superstitious and are in need of some luck, try eating these foods to bring some fortune:
- Tangerines and Oranges – To bring luck, Chinese people eat oranges and tangerines. It is said that if they have leaves on them, that is even better because leave symbolize longevity.
- Lentils – Italian people feast on lentil to bring prosperity because they look like tiny coins.
- Grapes – Spanish people turn to grapes. Originally they ate grapes because of a surplus and the practice ended up sticking around.
- Pigs – Pigs represent prosperity so eat all the bacon you can get your hands on!
- Lucky Chocolate Coins – The Irish turn to chocolate coins for their luck. I could definitely follow this tradition.
Most of these foods are consumed in order to have a lucky new year but there isn’t any harm in eating them for luck for the rest of the year!
Any other lucky foods out there?

Lucky Charms cereal?
Black eyed peas, for a good Southern tradition, and pork and saurkraut, for a German one.
Steak. Can't go wrong if you've just had a steak.
