  • Do You Like It Spicy?

People have different levels of tolerance for spicy foods.  A lot of it relies on ethnicity and what you've grown up eating.  Spicy foods can also be harmful to a weak stomach, although, they are said to speed up the metabolism and aid poor circulation.

So, depending upon who you are, your likes and dislikes and the condition of your health, spicy foods may or may not exist in your diet.

I have always loved spiciness.  I pour dried red chili pepper all over my pizza and my favorite chocolate bar is Lindt Excellence Chili Dark Chocolate.  When a sharp or peppery spice has been added to a dish, I welcome the extra heat.

I can obviously handle myself pretty well around most spicy foods but I can think of 3 foods that have wrecked havoc on my taste buds:

    1. Kimchi - This is a Korean pickled food.  It is by far the spiciest thing I have ever eaten.  I have sometimes struggled through a spicy meal but I can normally make it all the way through.  I couldn't get through the Kimchi though.  I unfortunately had to throw it out!
    2. Tindaloo - This is an Indian dish.  There is a less spicy option, Vindaloo.  The dish is comprised of usually either chicken or lamb and what makes it spicy is the curry used called, Phall.
    3. Habanero Pepper - Years ago, when I was out to dinner with my family, my brother dared me to try this pepper.  I gulped it down and 2 glasses of wine and 1 glass of milk quickly followed.  I was under the impression that wine and milk would put the fire in my mouth out.  All it did was get me very drunk.  My mouth was in pain for quite a few hours after that...
Do you like spicy foods?  What is the spiciest thing you've ever eaten?

LOL drunk and spicy. What a combo.

I like spices, but I have never cared for spicy hot foods.  The heat doesn't add to the flavor and if it is too hot, it kills my taste buds and makes the rest of the food rather flavorless.  I used to be able to tolerate a little bit of heat before I got pregnant, but now it just gives me heartburn.

I love spicy food. I really like Kimchi, though I don't think it's that spicy. *shrugs* My favor spicy food is jerk chicken. Six year ago, I went to this authentic Indian restaurant in England, I have no clue what I ate but it was the spiciest thing I had ever eaten before. But it was so good.  Also, a few years ago my father dared me eat a teaspoon of Wasabi for $20, I could feel the spiciness through my nose for an hour.

I used to not be able to stand any heat, but after years of eating at Mexican restaurants I now enjoy up to about medium salsa.  It doesn't get hot until I stop eating it, and by then I usually have my food and that cools the heat.

I'm Pakistani, so I was raised eating really spicy foods.  I do agree, however, that some foods, if made too spicy, definitely takes away from the taste.  It makes one's mouth burn so much, that the eater ends up focusing how to make the mouth burn and crazy tearing up and nose running to stop rather than being able to savor what the dish actually has to offer.

With that being said, I did try some of the hottest sauce on the planet (or so what I had been told) and survived without tearing up...that was until I accidentally rubbed my eye without washing my hands two minutes later. -_-

But other than that, I love testing my limits as to how spicy I can handle. =)

I love spicy foods too! :)  When I was a kid (around 3 or 4) I used to eat jalapeno's right out of the jar. Mom said she never stopped be because they didn't seem to bother me.

When I make bloody mary's I put in a couple slices of jalapenos and mix in some cholula and pepper.

Try putting a chunk of the chili dark chocolate into some hot chocolate....YUM!!!

I love it. I'm so addicted to Cholula (not very spicy, but it's delicious!) that I carry a small bottle around in my backpack. And when I make rice, I NEED Sriracha. mmmm.. I'm starving.

I love spicy foods, I love going to Buffalo Wild Wings and getting the Mango Habanero sauce, even bought a bottle for home.
I grew up in the mid-west and hear tons of people who claim they like spicy/hot food but then when they actually eat it they cry that it is too spicy/hot. Take your standard spicy chicken sandwich at most fast-food places, like Wendy's or Jack-in-the-Box, both have some spice, but on a scale of 1-10 are about a 3, these same people who claim to like spicy think these sandwiches are more like a 7.
And I saw a special on food network about this, about how most people who claim to like spicy/hot food actually don't. When given a survey they said they liked spicy/hot foods with ratings of 6-10, but when eating the food anything over a 2 or 3 was too hot. The company concluded that many people actually just like to claim they like spicy/hot when they don't.

I guarantee I can out spice anyone!

  • meesta@xanga

cute. you think you can handle spicy food and cant even handle kimchee? habanero is understandably much hotter but kimchee really has no spice at all, even to korean newborns. (jk, but seriously, its not hot)

  • arenadi@xanga

Something interesting to note is that a person's taste for spice is largely determined by the amount of spice receptors in their mouth.  Some people only have a few receptors per square cm, some people have thousands.  The ones who have more have a higher sensitivity to the heat.  What feels like nothing to some people feels like fire to others, not because one person is tougher and the other weaker; but because of a simple difference in receptor sites.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - Same. I have a low tolerance for spicy foods anyways, and i'd rather taste the food than have my taste buds burned off.

  • Stop_That_Squirrel@xanga

I LOVE spicy foods and have a very high tolerance. where most people seem to be out of breath and sweating I'm calmly eating my food and not even tasting anything. a few weeks ago however I tried some shrimp from a restaurant where you could get either mild, medium, or XX. well, DUH, of course I picked the "deadly" one because I've never had a problem before. well, I struggled through the meal and ended up having to just stop because it wasn't worth it anymore. the spiciness was taking away from the experience of eating haha. other than that one time, I haven't had too many problems with it :D

  • BroadwayBound93@xanga

    Jalapenos and hot sauce, please!

Ha. I really like spicy food, but it's mostly about the flavor.
If something's hot just for the sake of being hot, then I don't usually eat it.
Truthfully, I'm way too scared to even think about trying a habanero. Eeks.

  • TwoHalvesOfAWhole@xanga

    I LOVE spicy foods <3

Kimchi is spicy? It's funny how you compared that to a Habanero pepper o___o

  • ailili@xanga

i looooove spicy. i've made it like a champ through kimchi and habanero haha

  • teacupxgirl@xanga

I love spicy foods with flavor (not just hot). Sichuan, Indian, Pakistani, etc cuisine ftw

Unfortunately, my boyfriend (epitome of the All-American white boy) can barely stand flaming hot cheetos. Haha

  • bonEtuh@xanga

i'll eat spicy foods but i don't absolutely love it.

  • omgitsCHARmander@xanga

My parents are Haitian, and many of their dishes involve a lot of spice.
    But really? Kimchi?

No offense, but that's pretty sad.
  • aznspartan94@xanga

Kimchi isn't spicy...Indian food isn't really either. What IS spicy, though, is consuming a couple of whole Mexican jalapenos (the real deal, not the kind you find at souplantation) washed down with a few milliliters of habanero hot sauce.
