  • Do You Remember Your First Food Affair?

For some reason, my brain has decided to forget the very moment in time I first realized my passion for food.  Sure, I had always eaten and even prepared a meal or two but I cannot recall the instant when food became much more to me than just a means of nutrition.

I do, however, recall the moment I fell in love with wine.  In 2004, Isabel, an impending hurricane, was on its way to Delaware.  University of Delaware canceled classes so everyone could get home safely.  My roommates and I thought it would be a good idea to stock up on the essentials, which of course involved a trip to the liquor store.  We picked up some wine and beer and headed back to our apartment.

At this time, I was completely obsessed with working out.  I would practice Pilates at least once, if not twice, a day to a workout video featuring Jennifer Kries (who still makes pretty awesome workout DVDs).

Everyone wanted to break open the alcohol but I made a huge deal about how I had to go workout first.  As I headed to my bedroom with Jennifer Kries in hand, the power went out.  I was devastated that I would not get to workout.  This is when one of my roommates poured me a glass of Yellowtail wine.  My life was never the same.

At first I protested, claiming I never liked wine.  He insisted I take a sip before I moved onto beer.  I’m not sure what was different about that glass of wine because I had certainly had others that I disliked but suddenly my revulsion vanished.  The rest of the night was spent with wine.

From there, I became well-versed in wine terms and then realized that, hey, I can pair this with food.  I figure that was when I began my food affair.

Do you remember when you suddenly realized food (or drink) was more than just a means of fending off hunger?  When was your first food affair?
