Do You Remember Your First Food Affair?
For some reason, my brain has decided to forget the very moment in time I first realized my passion for food. Sure, I had always eaten and even prepared a meal or two but I cannot recall the instant when food became much more to me than just a means of nutrition.
I do, however, recall the moment I fell in love with wine. In 2004, Isabel, an impending hurricane, was on its way to Delaware. University of Delaware canceled classes so everyone could get home safely. My roommates and I thought it would be a good idea to stock up on the essentials, which of course involved a trip to the liquor store. We picked up some wine and beer and headed back to our apartment.
At this time, I was completely obsessed with working out. I would practice Pilates at least once, if not twice, a day to a workout video featuring Jennifer Kries (who still makes pretty awesome workout DVDs).
Everyone wanted to break open the alcohol but I made a huge deal about how I had to go workout first. As I headed to my bedroom with Jennifer Kries in hand, the power went out. I was devastated that I would not get to workout. This is when one of my roommates poured me a glass of Yellowtail wine. My life was never the same.
At first I protested, claiming I never liked wine. He insisted I take a sip before I moved onto beer. I’m not sure what was different about that glass of wine because I had certainly had others that I disliked but suddenly my revulsion vanished. The rest of the night was spent with wine.
From there, I became well-versed in wine terms and then realized that, hey, I can pair this with food. I figure that was when I began my food affair.
Do you remember when you suddenly realized food (or drink) was more than just a means of fending off hunger? When was your first food affair?

I love wine. I'm terrible at pairing it, though. :P
I think my first moment involved helping my mom in the kitchen. She was a baker, so she used to bring home these amazing confections that looked impossible to make. Every time she was in the kitchen and needed help, I jumped at the chance. And she usually taught me, along the way, how to cook.
My "aha" moment involved the very first dinner I made for my boyfriend. I had made green beans, chicken, and potatos all seperatley before- but this time, I put together a themed italian dinner, everything homemade. I had so much fun. It was a challenege to me, and I loved it. I've loved cooking full course meals ever since: so does my boyfriend :>
@CuriousiTea@xanga - i'm the same too, i guess i just haven't had the touch to pair it with something equivalent to it. but i love wine.
I don't think "sustaining" is the word you're looking for, in the question. Perhaps "alleviating".
Anyhow, I've always enjoyed eating, mostly cuz my mom's always been a good cook, so food was always about enjoyment for me. It wasn't until I got to college that the opposite happened and I started seeing eating as something I was obligated to do for the sake of health (because I am NOT a good cook). College was also when I started baking though, since I finally had a kitchen.
I think I came out of the womb obsessed with food.
@just_the_average_jane@xanga - You are right. Who wants to sustain hunger?? Thanks!

@HollowTendencies@xanga - that makes 2 of us :P
I first fell in love with food in 12th grade when I took a cooking class just to fill up some space. I don't know what made me fall in love... but it was something with the preparation of food that just sparked my interest. Maybe it was the fact that I found out I could make food without killing anyone! Whatever the reason and whatever the dish, that was when I realized that food is more complex than I thought it was. Something about that made it irresistible to me since then. Even before I went to cooking school, I subscribed to the magazine we got our recipes from, and I insisted on taking the magazines to school with me when I was at my first college. I was obsessed... and became even moreso once I got into cooking school. yeah... that's when I first fell in love, and we're still going on strong.
