  • Waffles on the Slopes

I am originally from Hicksville, NY (yes, it is really called Hicksville; no, I do not play the banjo and chew straw) and our local mall used to sell these incredible Belgium waffles glazed with sugar and sometimes smothered in chocolate.  My friends and I would visit the mall weekly to stuff our faces and wander around stores on a sugar high.

One day, without any warning, the waffle stand just disappeared.  Of course, looking back, this closing was a defining moment for my health and well-being but I was heartbroken since those waffles were the best desserts I have ever had.

Years later, my boyfriend (now husband) dragged me skiing for the first time ever.  After a day of going terrifyingly fast down steep mountains and falling more times than I care to remember, I came upon a waffle haus.  Immediately, I was hit in the face with that intoxicating blend of waffle, chocolate and sugar.

I cannot begin to explain the exhilaration I experienced when I finally came across these little sweet treasures once again.  I eat one every time I begrudgingly go skiing.  It is certainly the best part of my treacherous trips to the snowy hills.

You can imagine my disappointment when I went skiing this weekend to a ski lodge that did not have a waffle haus.  Instead, I got to feast on burnt mini cheeseburgers and a rubbery hot dog.  My healthy food cheat day gone to waste!

The problem is that I can’t seem to shake the craving for one of these waffles now.  I know Whole Foods sells them but they do not come close to the real deal.  I am at a loss.

Any ideas where I else I can find these waffle or any recipes I can make on my own?
