Today, I happened to notice an e-mail from Continental Airlines promoting their monthly flight specials. Being me, I scanned it, wondering if I was going to see any announcement on a new in-flight menu that might, you know, not suck. I know this isn't exactly a novel observation, we all know airplane food is awful, but isn't it strange that it's consistently awful? There are several things I can count on when boarding a plane: scratchy blankets, that stale smell, and the same, shrink-wrapped meals.
Yes, I sound like a cranky old man right now. But seriously, back in the day, when flying was considered a more elegant form of travel, people had it good. Menus often included lobster and caviar...in coach. Whereas I get the same vegetarian/vegan meal on every single flight I'm on: quinoa salad and Indian food...it doesn't sound too bad but believe me...it gets old. So what are we to do? Well, we could
pack our own lunch.
What do you do on long flights? What has been your worst airplane meal?

I haven't had a worst meal, but over the summer I flew British Airways from New York to Heathrow (London) and all the food they gave us was really good, I was pleasantly surprised.
i like the link ! it's quite useful, thanks !
I actually like Continnental Airline's meal. Most airlines don't even offer meals anymore.
I don't have any bad experience so far.
aw i actually like airplane food. i mean i'd probably hate it at a random restaurant but the little packages have so much appeal whislt flying.
I like El Al meals, usually has some sort of hummus pita olive deal that you can't go wrong with. Also had a decent meal when I asked for Kosher, try that next time, just be a little aware of the dietary restrictions on bread around Passover time...some friends had their ignorance repaid with dry dry airplane matzo. Worst shrink wrapped meals have all been on U.S. companies for me, and from what friends have described.
On long flights, I will sleep or read.
I don't think I have ever had a really bad meal on a plane. On the other hand, I haven't had anything particularly memorable, either.
And the menus you mentioned sound like they were served back when flight attendants were called stewardesses, and were selected just as much for their sex appeal.
pretzels arent that bad, but i never go on flights with meals only juice/soda and pretzels but once i was in first class and the sandwich they gave me was horrible the bread was as hard as a rock
as for the scratchy blanket i usually carry my own
I think it's just a stereotype. I fly frequently and internationally on Delta/ Northwest/ Continental. I have never had any bad experience when it comes to airplane food. Both first class/ business class AND economy.
They give out ramen and ice cream!!!
Plus, Business Class dines in glass plates and real stainless steel forks and knives. Plus, they serve us an assortment of fresh breads. It's a dining experience.
I think airplane food used to suck for many years and people are just stuck on the idea without actually tasting and giving it a real chance. I've been flying for many years on a lot of different airlines and I've always been happy with the food. Only once did I not like the food given to me which was on an Air India flight and I think it was because it was too spicy and too vegetarian for me. They ran out of non veg so I was stuck with that.. bah.. lol... Airlines are taking more effort than ever to make food hygienic and tasty.
