  • We Make a Beautiful Pear

It always fascinates me how we discover new foods based on others' recommendations. When I was little, it was less about recommendations as it was an order from my mom to be a member of the "Tasty Club." Now I'm (slightly) older, food recommendations often come to me like musical ones..."Hey, found this great thing that you should check out!" Hands down, the one I am most grateful for is the suggestion to try the Asian pear.

This amazing fruit, a cousin of the European pear, was introduced to me by a southern friend, and I haven't looked back since. It is amazingly crisp, light and sweet...I would compare it to a high-quality glass of wine or perhaps even a sunrise...but maybe I am just a little too sentimental. Unlike the traditional pear shape, these pale yellow beauties are round and resemble apples in shape. They are known for keeping well and are a mere 50 calories for one medium pear! What a deal.

I personally eat my Asian pears straight up, but a popular recipe is Asian pear slaw, which you can find here. Enjoy!

Have you ever tried an Asian pear? Thoughts? Recipes?
