Oatmeal. It's what's for breakfast in 2010. Starbucks has been serving oatmeal for a while now and came as part of their more healthy and nutritious breakfast reinvention. According to this article from
Serious Eats, McDonald's is now serving it! I've read nothing but good reviews from the people who've actually tried the oatmeal at McDonald's. I heard that it could actually give Starbucks a run for their money.
What are the differences between the two? Many people are discussing that it's just the instant stuff that comes in a package and others are worried about the calories. Oatmeal is oatmeal, it's about what's inside that counts.
At McDonald's you are served Maple oatmeal with the dried fruit already inside. This has a calorie content of 260 and only costs $1.99. Starbucks oatmeal goes for $2.45 and is served plain with a side of optional mix-ins. The calories range from 140 for just the oatmeal to 390 for all the mix-ins.
In my opinion, I much prefer my own oatmeal. I make it at home quite often actually. I use the 5 minute instant plain Quaker oatmeal or when I have more time I make Steel Cut Oats, which take 30 minutes. Steel Cut oats have a better texture, they are a little more crunchy and not as mushy. They are my favorite. In my oats I usually include ground flax seed, a banana, granola, honey, and peanut butter.
During the pumpkin season, I often added pureed pumpkin to my oatmeal to give it some extra flavor and consistency.
If I had to choose between McDonald's and Starbucks, I would choose Starbucks, mainly because of the atmosphere. You go into a McDonald's and it's always a zoo and the service is almost always sub-par. Starbucks is worth the extra few cents because of the service and atmosphere. I also prefer to add in my own toppings, which you don't have the option of at McDonald's.
Have you tried the oatmeal at McDonald's or Starbucks, which do you prefer? Do you even like oatmeal?

Didn't know either were serving oatmeal..But I'm not a big fan of it. So I doubt I'd eat it..
@isingstupidsongs@xanga - I didn't know they served it either.
I like oatmeal, though, but I wouldn't buy it from a fast food place.
Neither...I make my own.
I don't know about the oatmeal at either outlet, never order one before, but yes, I love oatmeal.
i've only ever had the plain, sugar-less oatmeal that my parents made. ecccchhh.
this, on the other hand, actually looks decent. i'd try it.
Ooo, Mcdeez has oatmeal.. I hope they have it at the ones here.
I love Oatmeal, I usually get the Quaker fruit variety oatmeal.. yum. xD
I'm allergic to oatmeal. Just give me some meat.
I'm actually a huge fan of oatmeal. (:
Usually just have the Quaker original with some cinnamon sprinkled on top.
Yummy.
i love oatmeal! I prefer making my own :)
never tried it at those two places. I prefer grandma's brand oatmeal and raisin cookies that come in individual packages.
I have never tried either of those. I prefer oatmeal made at home. Then you know exactly what's going into it. I can never trust McDonald's.
Seems silly that people would go somewhere to get oatmeal for breakfast! If you have time to stop for oatmeal at mcD's or Starbucks, then you have time to make it at home!
That said, Im not really an oatmeal fan!
I've never had oatmeal before.
I've known that Starbucks serves oatmeal, but was never interested.
I love Starbucks oatmeal, but I didn't know McDonalds was serving it as well. :) I would eat either, though.
Oh I really want to try both! Sounds good and interesting.
I love oatmeal. And Starbucks and McDonald's have been serious competitors ever since McDonald's came out with their McCafe specials.
I have not heard or Starbucks nor McDonalds selling oatmeal...that's new and quite interesting...although I'd never go to fast food/cafe to get oatmeal. I like my oatmeal from home! That's the best way to go.
mmm oatmeal

I make my own.. steel cut scottish oatmeal is the way to go
It was weird seeing Jamba Juice selling oatmeal, then I saw oatmeal at Starbucks but this is the first I heard of McDonalds selling oatmeal. I haven't bought oatmeal at any of those places but have received a free sample at Jamba Juice while waiting for a smoothie once. It didn't taste bad but I just wouldn't want to pay $3 for oatmeal when I can buy a box of 10 instant packets for the same price. If you have the time, plain from old fashioned oats from the canister topped with a little brown sugar and dried cranberries is much tastier!
Starbucks oatmeal is so good. I've not tried McDonalds...
Then again i work at Starbucks.
I try finding oatmeal at a grocery store, but it never tastes the same.
You want Starbucks oatmeal? Go to the dollar store and buy a box of instant, because that's all it is. I used to work there...all it is is Quaker Instant Oatmeal packaged for them.
$2.60 after tax for ONE thing of oatmeal? Me thinks not. That's almost $27 for 10 oatmeals, and the dollar store sells 10 in a box for a dollar. If you want it to taste exactly the same, don't add as much water as the back of the bag says...make it slightly less. Example, if it's 1/2 cup water, fill the cup to slightly below the 1/2 line. You can go to any Starbucks and pick up the toppings for free. Just make like your "friend" bought it earlier...but forgot the toppings and you need them. They'll give them to you for free. Starbucks employees are trained not to say "NO" within reason. You can always ask for a little cup of milk, hot or cold, or a cup of hot water for your "kid" and make your own stuff for half the price.
Get shots over ice if you like a latte. Then go to the condiment bar and add the milk from there. That's basically all I did as a barista...add milk to shots. Save yourself a few dollars!
Starbucks oatmeal is great...convenient, and filling!
neither. i prefer brown sugar and almonds in my oatmeal to dried fruit
