  • Easy Shrimp and Prawns Recipes

This is a guest blog from Teczcape.

Prawns – what we usually call them in Asia, or shrimp, as termed in the United States – are one of the easiest types of seafood to cook. And I love shrimp anytime, especially when they are fresh! I have another easy recipe for a scrumptious shrimp dish (coming up soon...). Other than steaming like this, they can be cooked with ginger, Chinese cooking wine, egg white, and then sometimes garnished with sliced red chili, sometimes garnished with gojiberries.

there are other ways of cooking them easy.

What is your preferred way of cooking shrimps? And can you guess how I cook my next shrimp dish? Don't get complicated and dwell too deep.

As the Cantonese says Har when talking shrimps, I hope the coming new year will bring lots of cheer and happiness to you. Eat shrimps and go HaHaHa! Live. Life. Happy.

Apparently, westerners and even westernized Chinese people are disgusted by shrimp with head on them.

I don't understand this.  The head is the best part.  I eat the whole thing, head and all.

I like mine lightly coated in szechuan pepper and salt seasoned flour and deep fried, then tossed in a wok with some garlic, chili peppers and scallions.

@arenadi@xanga - i guess when ur not exposed to the many different ways of eating shrimp it would seem disgusting to some.. i guess as ive grown up and matured.. become wiser ;) i like to think that I'm more accepting of other people's culture and lifestyles. I personally would never want to try eating shrimp/prawns with the head on because I've never had it that way and it doesnt seem appetizing to me but I'm ok with others doing it.. my boyfriend and i were talking bout something similar a while back where he was telling me that there are certain fish which are eaten with head and all and i was surprised with hearing that because i'm only used to eating filet fish or with the head and fins and stuff cleaned off... he was telling me the head is the most tasty part... again i dont think i could ever try such a thing... but im ok with each to their own...:)

@gweirdo@xanga - This reminds me of the scene from the movie "No Reservations" with Catherine Zeta Jones and Abagail Breslin; where taking her niece Zoe in after her mother is killed in a car accident, she attempts to feed her.  CZJ, who plays a top chef in the movie, prepares a whole steamed fish (head and all) on a plate with some parsley and lemon slices for Zoe, who is probably about 10 years old, who looks at her aunt (CZJ) as if she just tried to serve her a monster on a plate.

Another thing Culinarily interesting here is that for many years, the belly of the Tuna and the Salmon were cut out and thrown in the trash when the fish were being parted out; because people were unaccustomed to it, and thought it was a waste part.

It wasn't until recently that suddenly, people realized that the belly of the fish was the best part; and the belly of the Tuna, the o-toro, became so highly prized that it fetched a price higher than the rest of the entire fish.  I wonder if Fish heads will ever become this way.  I can buy an entire Salmon Head for about $1 dollar now.

@arenadi@xanga - take advantage of the good prices while you can :) Did you know that even lobster was considered the cockroach of the sea and were eaten only by poor fisherman at one point in time... now they are served only in 5 star restaurants... ironic isn't it... this kind of reminds me of my sister's situation.. every month my parents would take me and my sister to red lobster for lunch and every time we went there we would have crab legs and enjoy dipping the steamed flesh in hot lemony butter.. she had tried it once and had convinced herself that she didn't like it so ended up ordering anything but crab legs. we all were pretty surprised that she didn't like them.. (what is not to like in crab legs!!!) and we continued enjoying them whenever we went.. finally a couple years later she allowed herself to try it again after our insistent begging and she lovedddd them... haha... there are some things ive been open to trying.. i guess to me it's my mind set at the moment and how it's displayed.. when we went to the everglades in florida we got to eat the local delicacy.. they served us frog legs and alligator. I ate the alligator (it was very good, tasted like tough chicken!) but i couldn't try the frog legs. I guess they looked so much like actual frog legs so i didn't feel like trying them... hmmm... what's the weirdest thing u've eaten? and what did it taste like?

That looks sooooo delicious. I am a seafood junkie to the max! MMM. I think I'm definately going to try that.

Something that is interesting that i've tried and turned out well is cooking in ginger salad dressing. I know sounds gross, but with the right seasoning and noodles, its seriously delicious.

@gweirdo@xanga - The weirdest thing I've eaten is actually a post I'm working on haha :)

As for your sister and crab legs, I think a lot of times it depends on where they're made and how they're cooked.  I've had some pretty bad crab legs before, notably at Red Lobster, in fact :P  But when crab legs are done right, they're very very good.  One of my favorite places to eat is the Bellagio buffet, where they cook their crab legs perfectly and they slice them in half lengthwise so all you have to do is peel and eat -- as much as you want.  It's possible her first experience was just bad; and the next one was really good.

Most of the weird things I've eaten were eaten when I was drunk, including frog legs :)

@arenadi@xanga - i can't wait to read your post about weird food... and yeah i never thought about the crab legs that way... i honestly love crab so much that it's all good to me... but there's certainly better crab than others. i like it when my mom steams it at home and then makes her own butter lemon sauce to dunk with...  in india theres a place called Goa which is considered the Hawaii of the east for its beaches and bohemian lifestyle. many Indians regularly go vacation there as well as Europeans to take a break from the cold winters elsewhere... They are known for their prawn curry which is soo yummy and also their crab curry... both are super delicious... I think it has something to do with being made with a base of coconut milk... i think that's why i love thai tom kha soup so much which is also made with a  coconut base... hmmmm the bellagio buffet are u referring to the las vegas bellagio hotel buffet? I've never had the buffet there.. but i had the buffet at sahara hotel in vegas where i stayed a couple nights while sight seeing with my family. i have never seen buffets that long until i went to vegas...!!! but i did go to the bellagio to watch the O show "cirque du soleil" which is one of my favorite moments.. and also to watch the bellagio fountains which is so pretty and breath taking... hmmm will keep and eye out for ur post :) happy cooking/eating!!!
