Daily Q: What is the Most Unusual Fruit or Vegetable You've Ever Eaten?
This fruit is the most weirdest, toxic thing I have ever tasted. This exotic fruit is called Durian, the King of Fruits. It smells like a gas leak, and it tastes like you just puked in your mouth.
In many Asian countries durian is a considered specialty. Durian is so special that it's illegal to carry it in Singapore trains. Yes, that deadly.
Personally, I don't like it. But a select few do because it's just plain weird.

I used to work at a Non-Profit Hospital that served the Immigrant Asian community in the SF Bay Area. As a result of this, most of the people who worked there were Asian, and many of them were old Asian ladies who liked to bring in all sorts of food to the office. This was good for the most part, because every day there was a bunch of random home-cooked Asian Food on the table for anyone to eat. The bad part, however, was sometimes we had some pretty funky stuff in the office.
One day, someone smelled a gas leak, and the whole Hospital was evacuated. The Police came, along with a bunch of Emergency Services personnel, to investigate the building. The traced the gas leak to its source -- a trash can on the 3rd floor of the Administration building.
It was a half-eaten Durian.
*head in hands*
I love durian! Especially in shakes, mmmm.
i think passion fruit is pretty weird
i dont even know how to eat it
i like it in drinks though
I like it. It just depends on preference. Andy Zimmerman can eat the weirdest shit like a horse's penis or a worm that has a face. But when he went to Thailand and attempted to consume durian he puked. hahaha I love that man
omg, i thought of durian when i saw the title in my inbox.
lychees look pretty weird too, but they taste soo good. :]
@phuck_diz_shiz@xanga - Passion fruit has edible seeds...cut it in half and scoop it out...much like a watermelon.
I think the strangest veg I've tasted was salsify...perhaps it was improperly cooked, but that was one of the slimiest vegetables I've come across. Rhubarb can be a deadly fruit if the wrong part is eaten, but it's definitely a good fruit to eat.
I went backto Taiwan a few years ago and had my first encounter with durian. Actually, it wasn't my first but I can't remember my childhood there. IT WAS DISGUSTING.
I'm not sure if lychee is considered weird, but if I had never seen them until now, I would probably think it's not safe to eat because of the spikes.
I don't know if it has anythign to do with a chinese background, but the durian fruit seems pretty normal to me. But i can definately see where you're coming from - with its intoxicating smell, weird external look and even weirder insides.
One fruit I find pretty weird is the "Dragon fruit" aka Pitaya. They look so funky being bright pink on the outside and white with lots of edible black seeds inside. They're pretty sweet.
And here I thought kumquats were unusual
I like durian. Most chinese people are okay with it though. It looks weird and such, but I think I like it because my mom ate it when I was in her stomach. My brother likes it too, but my dad thinks it reeks. I think it smells perfectly fine.
Hahaha... Durians :) And I'm the only one in my family that can't stand them.
Where I'm from, I see "rambutans" a lot. But It's still really weird to me, because the outside is red and covered with green hairs or tentacle-like thingies. :/
I've had durian before, but it was in an avacado smoothie, so i couldn't really taste the true flavor.
I dunno, i think i've eaten mostly normal stuff. Dragonfruit, and lychee are probably the most 'exotic' i have had. They are good. One thing i really want to try is rutabaga!! This is mostly because it sounds so cool. I almost bought canned diced rutabaga from the store the other day, but unlike my usual adventurous attitude, i was scared so i didn't! :(
@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - Me too! =D
@arenadi@xanga - LOL XD
Let me tell you about my story with durian. This one time I was at the cinema standing in line waiting to get inside the theater and I was doing this while drinking a Durian Milkshake which was from a Vietnamese restaurant that I just had dinner at. Then, I hear the people behind me started talking and were wondering who the hell farted and had their nose covered. lol... They had no clue where the smell was coming from and throughout the entire time I was giggling because I thought it was funny, but I didn't want them to think that I farted or something. >_<
i love durians when they're fresh out of the shell thingy. lol
hmmm the most unusual fruit..not sure
I LOVE THAT FRUIT xD
My parents and some of my friends love Durian, but I HATED the smell since I was little, so I always leave the room whenever a durian is cut open.
The first fruit I ate in my trip to China was a starfruit, which I never see in my city's supermarkets.. only in picture books haha so I don't know if that is considered exotic. Then there's lychee, longan, kumquats (I didn't like it)... I don't know how to tell if any vegetables are exotic because I don't know how to say them in Chinese or English.. I just eat them without questioning.
Anyone ever eaten tamarind candies? They're so good and I always stare at it in the supermarket because I want to eat the tamarind plant.
The smell is pungent, and takes a little time to get used to.. The meat is creamy, slippery, and faintly sweet. and it makes you take the number 2 real easy.. and your sh*t will smell like durian. But it's pretty good. Too bad it makes my mouth itch. I haven't eaten any since my travel to Vietnam. My former 28 yr old priest-to-be gay-crush shoved them in his mouth like it was nothing, and literally slobbered all over them haha. Good times. Sorry for the random input. ;]
The strangest fruit to me, is that pomegranate. It's structure is strange. But I tried something that looked like seeds in Vietnam, and it's furry inners tasted like tamarind. My grandma's sister who lives there gave them to me. It was interesting!
heyyyyy is it weird that I only know of durians through kicking them around in Super Mario Sunshine?!
breadfruit! most delicious thing ever tho.. yumm
haha yes! i live in singapore and if someone smuggled durians onto the train, the smell would be so overpowering and somehow turned into something nauseating.
i think they should ban people from bringing it onto buses as well because i had some lady slamming an entire bag of durians - with shells - against my leg. i bled.
Probably durian, I can't think of the other names of some unusual fruit I've tried.
my friend Tina brought in this weird Asian fruit. It was orange and like a mixture of pumpkin and a orange and an apple but it was sweet.
MY FAMILY EATS DURIAN ALL THE TIME! I USED TO LIKE EATIN' IT AS A KID... NOW... I CAN'T STAND THE SMELL OR SIGHT OF IT... IT REPULSES ME! IF YOU EAT IT... OR DARE TO TRY IT MAKE SURE YOU EAT IT IN AN OPEN AIR AREA OR BETTER YET JUST EAT IT OUTSIDE! 'CUZ THE SMELL LINGERS IN YOUR HOUSE OR WHEREVER INSIDE FOR AWHILE AND YOU'LL GET SICK OF IT EASILY!
@pinkkiex53@xanga - persimmons? sooo yummy♥
