  • Brew Beat: Chimay Doreé

    Review by LG

This "Doreé" is a table beer from Bières de Chimay, brewed in the style of a Belgian Pale Ale. This is the only Chimay beer I've had, and I will say I think it's quite good.

Pour: Golden-yellow in color and hazy. Thick 2-fingered head that dissipates almost all the way, leaving some lacing and a small ring of foam on top of the beer.

Smell: Floral hops are the star of this beer. Some sweet maltiness, a little bit of fruitiness, and a honey note.

Taste: Delicate malt sweetness with a sweet yet tart fruit note with a touch of a nutty and yeasty flavor. Back finishes up with a sweet yet spicy hop bitterness and a little bit of that honey sweetness. Not the most complex beer I've tried, yet very good.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Delicate mouthfeel that's very smooth.

Drinkability: Goes down easily and you can have a few without it being too filling or overbearing.

Final Notes: A good session beer, or a good beer to have with a light meal. This beer will also be a nice introduction to better beers for those beer drinkers who may not have developed a palate for the heavy-duty stuff. At 4.8% ABV, this is the only low-ABV beer Chimay produces. I'm going with "B" on this one.

Good to see one of the Chimay beers make the front page.

    Now, let's talk beer!!!

Awesomeness! I started a Beer Journal of my own, what's cool is that the local grocery store has a mix and match your own 6 pack, so I've been trying a lot of microbrewed stuff, both local and out of state. Thanks for sharing, you rock!

Nice review but I prefer the heavy duty beers... although this give me a chance to seek out obscure, hard to get beers.

I've sampled well over 100 different beers, and there's only one that fit's my fancy, every time: Budweiser. Yea, it sounds boring, but I absolutely love the stuff. It's not too flavorful, like a heavier beer or one of those fruity seasonal beers, it's not too filling, like Guiness or Negra Modelo, it's got the perfect body and flavor balance for cooking and frying with, and the "mouthfeel" (as you called it) is perfect, every time. As much as I love being adventurous in my beer drinking, the beer in my fridge at home will always be Budweiser. On a completely different note, the worst beer in the history of the universe is without a doubt Rogue: Santa's Private Reserve, or "Rogue Santa" as my friends and I call it. It tasts like Dawn dishsoap lightly stirred into rusty tapwater. To think that somebody spent time brewing it, sampled the end result and said "That's perfect" is the most mind boggling thought to ever cross my mind. Nuff said? I think so.

I've never had Doreé, but I love everything else I've had by Chimay.
