There's a scene in an old episode of Seinfeld in which Elaine delivers a hilariously memorable rant about the tradition of bringing cakes into the office. Seemingly every day someone was gathering the whole floor in the office lounge to blow the candles out on a cake for some reason or another.
When someone brings a "get well cake" into the office after Elaine had been out sick or a day, she finally blows her top:
"What? What is nice? Trying to fill the void in your life with flour and sugar and eg and vanilla?" she screams.
"I mean, we are all unhappy. Do we have to be fat, too? I don't want one more piece of cake in my office!"I love a free cut of cake as much as anyone, but it's hard not to find some truth in this. Earlier this week, my office somehow had two cakes and a plate of cookies on a single day in honor of three people I'd never met. That was followed by a pie yesterday to celebrate someone's wedding engagement. After a while, it can get a bit old.
Where do you stand? When someone says, "Cake in the break room," do you smile and enjoy the free frosting or just roll your eyes.

I will eat it. Then I will work it all off later.
I never turn down free sweets.
Dude! Free cake! As long as it's good cake, I'm all for it.
I love free. I love sweets. I love free sweets. It all works out.
Lol. Life in the office looks interesting and stereotypical. I kinda want to watch "The Office" or something of that sort right now. I like cake but not if it is too sweet. I would just turn down the cake if there is one everyday.
lol jeez i think its nice to do it and everyone gets happy if they see there are treats! well most people..
Sweets make me happy on boring workdays.
Thanks god, we have sweets sometimes at office, cakes, pies, and candy.
Since I don't like sweets, I find it hilarious that there are so many different situations in which people are completely stressed out about eating too much or how to say no to sweets.
I couldn't care less if there was cake or not, or even homemade gooey choco chip cookies, in the office.
But give me a good Asian street food or a steaming bowl of Pho then... look out!
I don't eat it... unless I know its vegan... which, unless I made it, is easy to assume, not vegan
The real question is, "Cake or Death?"
I think it's nice to have a friendly environment at work. You can be polite and gain a few friends, but that doesn't mean you have to have cake or cookies. Even if you decline, they won't think you're a horrible person. And if they're not understanding enough to realize that, sometimes, people don't want free, fattening foods, then they're not very good co-workers to begin with.
i like all the cakes.
depends on what kind of cake but its never good cake so nah unless its beard papa cream puffs. co-worker brought that into the office once and i loved that person for the rest of the day.
A week ago, someone brought in an entire plate of homemade baklava to the office. Now, I can turn down office birthday cakes or gross store-bought cookies, but if someone makes homemade cookies or brings in a treat like baklava, I have no problem eating it for lunch instead or just deciding to indulge.
Cake and I have a love/hate relationship.
i usually turn down free goodies at work. i dunno, it never seems like something i'd have too hard a time passing up. i'd much rather someone bring in free chips and salsa.
(or free bagels for breakfast and tacos for lunch, the office anyone?)Someone usually bakes a cake for the birthday person...but this person makes the cakes very dense so I'll pass. But the big cheese buys breakfast or lunch twice a month and we get to pick our own plate...not going to say no to that, right? Also we rotate bringing goodies for breakfast like pan dulce or donuts, sometimes I'll have one.
