  • Frugal Feeds: Uses for Stale Bread

A man cannot live on bread alone, but if he knows how to use stale bread properly, he can certainly save himself some cash.

We've all probably found ourselves throwing away stale rolls or baguettes at some point – bread that's technically edible, but just to hard and dry to eat. Yet even if it's not fit for sandwiches, there are plenty of ways to make sure your stale bread doesn't go completely to waste. Here are a few:

Stuffing: Simply cut up your stale bread into small chunks, then mix it with your favorite meat stock and chopped vegetables. The stock will make up for the bread's lack of moisture.

Croutons: Chop your bread into small chunks, brush with olive oil, season however you wish and back on a cookies sheet until crisp but not burned.

Bread crumbs: Drop your stale bread into a blender and hit the button until it's ground into small bits. Use as a coating for fried foods.

Sauce Thickener: Make bread crumbs using the method above, then add to any sauce recipe in place of corn starch or flour for an alternative thickening agent.

Bread Pudding: Mix larger bread pieces with eggs, milk, sugar and seasonings, then bake in the oven at 350 degrees until it reaches the desired consistency.

French Toast: You don't want it to be too stale for this one, but bread that's lost some of its moisture will actually hold up better in the frying pan.

What are some of your uses for stale bread?
