Daily Q: Do You Salt Before You Taste?
Depending on the account, either Henry Ford or Winston Churchill or Teddy Roosevelt or some other old timey authority figure once said that he refused to conduct business with a man who salted his food before he tasted it, as it was proof of simplistic analytical skills. That's of no consequence to salt fiends who know – just, know – that whatever they're served couldn't possibly have enough salt for their buds.
How about you? Do you salt your food before you taste it?

I have high blood pressure, I don't salt anything.
I find it repulsive when people do that.
I rarely salt anything (even when I am cooking). I like to taste my food, not a salt lick!
I always taste and salt, but only if necessary. Salt is only awesome in moderation.
Depends. Before, I just sprinkled a little bit before anyway because I do have a higher liking to salty foods and I just did it out of habit, really. But now I usually always taste things before I re-season them. When you're going to a culinary school, these things really start to rub off on you. It's not worth ruining a delicious dish just because you think you need more salt when you don't ^_^
@der_lila_Stern@xanga - repulsive is quite the strong word, though ! ahaha is it really that disgusting ?
Typically I don't. Only when I know the recipe and everything that had previously gone into it (and I know I would like more salt (ALWAYS coupled with copious amounts of fresh ground black pepper)) do I salt before eating. But 99% of the time I'll try it first.
only if it's something i've had multiple times before.
i'm trying not to salt anything right now, though.
Never! I agree with @der_lila_Stern@xanga, I never add additional salt at the table, and I don't use much when I'm cooking. That was why I ended up losing weight when I went to college --I was on a meal plan, adn everything at the dining hall just tasted like I was eating salt, it made me feel nauseous.
@SamiiSaysHaii@xanga - I find it repulsive on many levels. The thought of even tasting it is horrendous to me. But mostly, I find it repulsive that someone would insult the cook by not even tasting the food first. Its like saying you dont trust the person who cooked it to season food properly.
I always taste first before adding any sort of seasoning.
@der_lila_Stern@xanga - Lol, well then I'm guessing you're not a vrey good cook. Do you get offended when people salt any food that you made? I hate eating other people's cooking when they use no salt at all...it tastes like nothing!
The salt pot died in our house about 18 years ago, it only features when my Granddad comes because he says it not proper table etiquette for it not to feature on the table.
Also when we have some dishes, my Dad and when my sister usually put on the sauce which my mum has made before even trying the dish.
As for soup my Dad usually salt and pepper it before even tasting the soup, my mum makes home made soup and does put in salt and pepper as she goes along.
@LauraG0929@xanga - there is a huge difference between tasting food and then salting it and simply salting it.
And actually, if you knew anything at all about cooking, you would know that proper seasoning can often be done with little or no salt.
@der_lila_Stern@xanga - You said yourself, "I find it repulsive on many levels. The thought of even tasting it is horrendous to me. " so the fact that someone might taste it before or after salting it is a moot point. Also, of course you can make plenty of things without salt, but to refuse to ever use it because you think it is SO repulsive...that's going a little over board.
No, I don't add salt to anything, usually the food I have is already salted.
I don't add salt. I add seasoning. I usually taste before I add anything extra.
@LauraG0929@xanga - Im sorry that you misunderstood my response to the other person. The thought of tasting it with so much salt on it is repulsive.
Who refuses to use salt?
I always taste first. I'm not really a salt person, but I really like chilli and pepper.
NEVER. I am sensitive on salt--most times I think things are too salty as is, without the added salt. :P
Pepper, on the other hand, SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE! Prior to tasting, for certain foods.
@pizo_Okie@xanga - haha agreed. how do you know how much salt to put on if you don't taste it first!
I salt before I taste. Even if it has enough salt, I have really low blood pressue, so extra salt isn't gonna hurt me lol.
Yep I am a salt before taste because I love salty foods it nauseates my husband when I do it, but I do it in moderation
never... my fiance and i often argue about it too, he says i never salt things enough, but i would rather have it not salted enough and be able to add to it then to have it so over salted it offends the taste buds. You can always add more salt, but you cannot fix over salted foods.
SALT GOES ON BEFORE TASTING! I love salt and I have very low blood pressure so BRING IT ON! ha ha!
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - seconded.
i have friends who *salt their fries* so i'm no stranger to over-salt-ers. i stay away from it myself though.
I taste if first, unless I've made/eaten it multiple times and know it's gonna need more. I don't add salt to food very often though.
