  • Halloween Candy: Our Top Picks

By this time tomorrow, streets and cul-de-sacs across the country will be swarming with tykes in masks and capes of all kinds of shapes. Only some will be wearing fangs, but all will be bearing sweet tooths, and you won't want to disappoint them.

Last week we shared our ideas on the worst treats to dole out to trick-or-treaters, and now that Halloween eve has arrived, we thought we'd take yet another nostalgia trip and share some of the candies we most loved to come across when we spilled out pillow sacks across the living room floor.

Some you can find at your local drugstore any time of the  year, while others seemed to pop their heads out only in October. Either way, they will be forever associated with Halloween.

(Note: Though we fondly remember neighbors who used to give out hot chocolate and cider, we've left homemade goods off the list in a nod to safety concerns. Wrapped goods only, please.)

Bit-O-Honeys: Props to the Old School neighbors who keep these gems in circulation by buying them by the bagful on Halloween. If the kiddies don't recognize them at first, they'll learn to soon enough.

Wax Vampire Fangs: It's candy you can play with, and even use to jazz up your costume. A perennial Halloween favorite.

Popcorn balls: If you're weary of homemade goods but want a change from commercial candy, pre-wrapped popcorn balls are a good bet. It's a healthy alternative the kids won't complain about.

    Bottle Caps: Simply magnificent.

Anything full size: Rumors would fly around the neighborhood about legendary houses known to give out the big big candy bars. After wading through two pounds of fun size Musketeers, nothing could be more refreshing.

What were some of your favorite Halloween candies as a kid? What do you think you'll give out this year?
