My daughter is going on a field trip tomorrow, so she needs to take a packed, disposable lunch to school. Normally that would mean a brown paper bag
– is what most parents use for times like this.
I do not have a paper bag. I use reusable bags when I grocery shop. No bags in the house! Oh no - what do I do?
I get creative.
What do I have? I have an oatmeal box. Yes, that will work. Grab the oatmeal box, duct tape, marker, paper and nail polish. And what do you get? You get a disposable lunch box that is not your average lunch box. :)
It has a duct tape handle. and it has pretty colors. Here are some pictures.
What do you think? What creative ways do you use to pack a lunch?

Mmmm I don't know... Not sure if kids that young are capable of this, but I would be scared that my kids would be called ghetto and trashy.
I used to date a guy who went to a college prep high school, and kids would actually tell him that he didn't deserve to be at that school because he was too poor (his parents "only" make $160,000 a year), and that the only reason he was allowed to be there is because his mom taught there so he got a big discount.
I wouldn't want to do this when I was a kid, I would definitely have been made fun of, and probably would have made fun of anyone who showed up with this (I was a kid, kids are evil). But I mean, if the kid is fine with it and no one makes fun of them for it, sure why not.
For some reason I keep thinking that this would have been a huge hit at my high school (we all regressed. at 17 we were acting like we were seven, at seven we were all mean bitches).
@gatorgirl54@xanga - That's lame (the kids). I realize they're just kids, but those kids grow up into the sort of people that I cannot stand -- thinking they're above everyone else, and entitled to everything. I can identify with that guy you're talking about here -- I didn't go to any kind of Elite Academy(tm) but I grew up in the projects and went to a pretty good school and got the same kind of crap from these same kinds of jackasses.
If I had to make something (assuming I had kids and was in a similar situation), I'd probably take a square piece of fabric, probably linen or something cute if it's a girl -- like I don't know, Pandas or Hello Kitty or Precious Moments fabric or something, crease and hem-tape the edges; then use a hole puncher to punch four holes in the four corners and four sides. Take those press-together metal O-rings, press them into the holes, and then tie them all together with a cord or shoestring (bundle together like a chinese dumpling top).
The kid can carry it as-is; or you can make the cord end long enough to be worn as a little knapsack.
Bag ready to go, 10-15 minutes. You can even double-sided-tape a layer of aluminum foil on top of a layer of pillow stuffing in there for insulation.
@live_for_love@xanga - haha it was the same for the kids at my school! in middle school we all acted like mean bitches that you see in the typical "high school" movies, but once we hit high school we started to act like kids again.
I would've loved to take this lunchbox to high school. elementary and middle? the kids were really mean to me :( (lived in the ghetto and got picked on for being too "rich", and when we moved to an upper-class area I got made fun of for being "poor".)
@stardustskye@xanga - Haha, it makes me happy seeing we weren't the only class like that. Yeah, elementary/middle school was rough as hell and we def had cliques and people got made fun of. As soon as 9th grade hit, we were all friends (well.. I'm pretty sure we all just had a mutual hate for each other at that point but we decided to have fun) and weekends were spent playing at parks and having bonfires and eating smores, no joke.
@chow - I freaking love this idea.
ummmm am i the only one who really wouldn't want to bring a "decorated" lunch box to school?
brown bag ftw.
I've seen some creative stuff with bento boxes.
I'll take the brown bags
I like the duct tape handle. The nail polish, not so much.
I just put my kids lunches in tuppaware boxes with klip lids, they both like them one has a red lid and one has blue.
i used a ziplock for my sandwiches until my sister in law bought me a sandwich box. NO more squished sandwiches :)
That's pretty creative. My mother always used Tupperware containers and plastic lunch boxes when I was younger, and I still use them today when I go to work or school. Paper and plastic bags are such a waste of resources and money.
@my_skeleton@xanga - me too... haha. this is too much effort for not such a fantastic result
brown bag. id be embarassed to lug that around
awww
maybe wrapping it like a gift, that would be cute and funny and prevent early snacking.
hehe
man now i want to try this idea! =)
thanks for the inspiration!
I'd rather hold the actual lunch in my hands. If my mom made that for me to carry to school, I would have been so embarrassed. I know it's with good intentions, but kids are mean. I wouldn't be able to show my face in school ever again! haha
if i were still at the age where my parents were making my lunch, i'd be embarassed to go to school with that. it just looks cheap. i'd rather have a non-disposable cute lunch box.
@chow - Dude...I'm almost eighteen and I would TOTALLY use one of those. xD! Great idea. I'm going to go try that out now..
jesus christ someone is a fucking attention whore.
That is a very cute idea!
I remember the days of the plastic lunch boxes with the thermos in elementary school. On field trips, I would bring my lunch in a brown paper bag. As I got older, I would bring padded, insulated lunch boxes to school.
Now when I go to work, I bring my lunch in a plastic bag.
I think I would just go a store and buy a insulated lunch bag that is reusable for a couple bucks.
Now THAT is clever. I want to make one for school one day. You can really personalize the lunch box.
