  • Taco Bell Offers Cupcakes, God Knows Why

If you needed any proof at all that the cupcake craze has outlived its cuteness, now you have it.

Word on the web is that Taco Bell, which serves up such delicacies as a double beef burrito with goopy orange "lava sauce," is trying for something more dainty. The Orange County Register's blog team reports that the fast food chain is now test marketing cupcakes, mini empanadas, fruit smoothies and several other un-Bell-like products at several Southern California locations. (Lest you think they've gone sissy, they will also be offering something called Atomic Bacon Bombers.)

This all sounds rather similar to Burger King's announcement last week that they'll be remodeling their stores for a "fast fresh" feel, and from a business standpoint it only makes sense. Today's fast food eaters expect a level of diversity, and restaurants are well advised to try to be all things to all people. Yet for a brand that has seemed to proudly strive to be fast food's lowest common denominator, suddenly tossing cupcakes into the mix seems just a little bizarre.

What do you think? Would you trust Taco Bell with your cupcakes?
